The Plexiglass cover plate over the control panel in the cockpit of my 1976 boat is understandably battered, chipped and scratched. It is about 3/4 inch thick and was originally carefully shaped - looking for suggestions for shortcut fitting a replacement, please.  -Bill

Hi Bill,

I just replaced the lucite in my fore hatch because of a crack and from the old piece which came out of the hatch, I made a new cover over the instrument panel. The lucite was 1/2 inch thick and cut easily with a jig saw. Once cut, you can file and sand the edges to shape it.  Check your yellow pages or Internet for " plastic suppliers"

Carney Plastics made all new cut to size windows and a plexiglass control panel cover (one that is built into the seating area) for our Mk I.  Very nice work, great prices and easy to work with.  Nice small family business.

For windows I had them cut slightly larger than the ones that were on the boat so I could custom fit with my dremel.  For control panel, I just supplied the old one and they cut to correct size including mounting holes.  Perfect fit.

I've had work done by three plastics shops and their work has been uniformly fine. I think many of us are a bit daunted by plexiglass because it's unfamiliar, but to a plastics shop, most of the tasks we present are no more difficult than sawing a 2x4 to length (particularly if you give them the old part as a template).

With the encouragement of a friend, I made a cover over the engine controls, as Clare Jordan did. With that successful, I made a curved cover plate for some old mounting holes in the deckhead. An interesting project. It is advisable to have an understanding (or absent) wife when you put sheets of plastic in her oven.

I've used P&A plastics in Hamilton Ont. they are very good at making curves & angles . I've had replacement windows made up by them to replace old clear cloudy C&C windows . They do a fantastic job on plexi house doors , vented or not . I've had them make new hatch covers . They always do great work.
