Buy a really good compact led flashlight instead. After 6 years, 2 -3 oil changes a year I can usually get the stick in the hole first try. (My wife is a witness). You are asking for trouble putting a hole in the cockpit floor. Alignment, size right on the first try ????; centering the sucker on the second try; cost of a good fitting, Sikaflex, and 5 + hours later and you've spent more time than at poking the oil stick for the next 10 years of oil changes. Plus the hole in the sole will leak and compromise the balsa core (guarranteed in the next 20 years). Your biggest leak issues will be over-winter storage with a tarp leaking and freezing water!

I have replaced two vintage external grab rails with stainless. They are thin but in good shape and located in Toronto. A beer or a the best sung song is all that it takes + S+H.

The life lines were getting kind of gritty from whatever. I tried cleaning them but they were too far gone to come back. New vinyl covered life lines are expensive ($100s). A better solution is to buy over sized Davis Stay covers. About $16 worth recovered to the top life lines and gave a thicker life line that is easier on the hands. The lowers were not that bad but I'll do the same when the time comes. Another more expensive trick would be to use white heat shrink (about $50).

Nice. However, before making any cosmetic improvement to lifelines, make sure they are physically sound. Often you'll find broken strands at terminals or at stanchions, and there's nothing as unsafe as a faulty safety device. Stay covers are also good protection against sheets and guys sawing through your lifeline's plastic portion - when you notice a gouge, just replace the stay cover (thanks, Yogi Bear). - Admin
I just had one made for $120 at "Slow Joe's" a local sail maker. If I did it again I might add side curtains (velcro) to cut off the sun from the sides in the late afternoon.
All it was is a panel with one side zipping into the dodger; a sewn in loop in the middle to tie to the boom and an abeam batten undreneath for support. The rear end has slits and a pole (abeam) to accomodate the back stays & mainsheet. It works well and is easy to install. Getting the Dodger connect was tricky and required a couple of call backs for Joe (he measured it with the dodger up). I'll try to get a picture on this site.

This year I bought a $40 commercial tarp and got a snug fit folding the excess material over and using a $10 hot melt glue gun to wrap it tight around the hull. I slipped in some carpet while gluing to ensure the gelcoat did not get affected. So far no problems and the glue is holding fast. At 1/3 the cost of shrink wrap (if I do not get another season out of it), I'm happy and the boat is secure. Next year a shrink wrap door gets glued on!

What did you get - if I may ask. I am #273. Do you have an inventory list handy?

I have tracks on my boat and would not sail without them. One mistake I often see is that they do not go back far enough for the 165% Genoa. Mine just make it.

I installed an audio alarm for Temperature and Oil pressure from Don Moyer. It works great and it allows me to cross the lake on autopilot without any worry and even snooze. I like it better than a flow detector. It was easy to install and I think the cost is similar ($63 + S&H U$). Make sure you use a deep 6 point socket to remove the fitting from the engine). Best of all I get the buzzer if I stall out coming in at idle speed. You can't miss it.
You could have a water flow past a sensor to a broken hose/fitting that does not cool the block too. Better to detect temperature & oil - I think.

I have a Mark 2 Kevlar Genny (160% ?) I would like to swap for a good cruising Genny (155%) plus or minus a few bucks or beers depending upon their relative conditions. When I bought the boat I looked up the sailmaker and new it sells for $3,000. There is no UV coating nor cover for it. The sail came with the inventory when I bought her three years ago and I've only flown her once myself. She's a cheater in that it goes from a cleat on the deck (which is about 9 inches below the furling drum top) to the top of the mast. If interested email me and I'll pull her out of the locker, measure her precisely and get the sailmaker's name and date of mfg.

Other than Moyer Marine does anyone know where you can get replacement thermostats for an A-4? Moyer's is S/S and over $100 and I was hoping to pick up a spare, cheaper somewhere. They are impossible to source from local auto suppliers as they are slightly different. Moyers takes a week to deliver so when it goes we're out of motor for a week at least.John Dallas

Lady Jane is a very well equipped & maintained Mark 2 with trailer that has cruised Florida. He has been advertising from the Highland Yacht club in Toronto for a couple of years at $29,000 (ouch). You can get his phone number by calling the Rigging Shop (Scarborough). They have his ad posted there or contact me & I'll get it next time I'm in the area. It was too rich for my blood but it does have 4 batteries, air brakes on the trailer, multiple anchors and custom roller sprit etc., etc,.... John Dallas

Has anyone had any experience with alternative deck care products like:
Oxalic Acid crystals: This is the active ingredient in most deck cleaners like Starbrite etc. Do you know the right concentration to mix? Also Oxalic acid is like bleach, it whitens and does no damage to fibreglass, but rinse it well as rubber, chaulking, wood etc does react with it.
Trewax Non-slip wax is sold by Home depot at about $10 for 180 sq ft of coverage. The Trewax web site says the liquid wax is safe for fibreglass and forms a high traction surface. Sounds like a good product to preserve an old deck longer..... Has anyone tried it?

I've got plenty.
Two mains (One I'd like to keep as a spare the other will cost a few pints of beer)
Kevlar Jenny (155%) but I want $1000 for this and suspect you're looking for else. It's worth $3000 new and realyy moves.
I have a 165% Jenny that a few hundred would take.
