Can anyone give me guidance on the best locations to drill the two holes for a Mark II rudder? Thanks.

Thanks all. Easy-Off didn't work for me, but it's an old can, which may not have helped. I went back to Interstrip, prowled the hardware stores, googled more and did more experiments. Finally found the right formula:

1. Mask off the cove.
2. Leave the Interstrip on much longer than we had been, about 45 minutes ar our temperature, and apply it thicker, touching up after the first 20 minutes.
3. 3M Contour Stripper is like 3M'sScotchBrite pad, but more porous. When I bent it, it fit perfectly into the cove. I was able to remove all the paint in the cove easily by gently moving the Stripper pad back an forth. No sign of scratches,

Thank goodness -- now we can get that job done, once the rain lets up.

I found a fruit or vegetable corer that fits the cove radius exactly. With careful grinding I turned it into a cove scraper to remove the few residual bits of paint, but it didn't lift that tenacious paint.

The C&C cove in the hull just below the deck seam was painted. We started stripping out the paint with Interlux Interstrip, but it is hard to get all the old paint out to prep for new paint or Mylar striping. I'm thinking about finding wooden dowl with the same radius as the cove, covering it with sandpapaer, and carefully using that to clean out the cove. Anyone know the radius? Any other suggestions?

I understand drilling two holes to let the water drain out, but where? The photo of Hyperion's exploded Mk II rudder suggests the empty space is small and a long way up from the bottom of the rudder. Is the idea to drill into the side of the rudder at about the top and bottom of that space?---------

I'm not sure if the white paint" might already be Interprotect. Will check with a PO. In any case, the last PO said the waterline was about 1/2" below the new red painted stripe, so that confirms your explanation. Thanks.---------

See this photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/penguinfun/2502637566/. It shows the waterline of a '74 Mark II. Would the original waterline strip have been red gelcoat? If so, then it has been overpainted with some kind of white stuff (hard paint?), then the lower 2/3 was painted with black then blue antifouling, and the upper 1/3 was painted with red paint. Do you think I have this right? Thanks.---------

#182 Re: General discussion » GOT NO SOLE » 2008-05-17 08:52:55

The PO for our new old Mk II did a very nice job. He used 1/4" teak/holly plywood and made the sole in two sections, split down the boat's midline. A couple of screws hold each piece in place against the glass sole. Looks just great. I took them up and put them out of the way while we renovate the boat to our liking.---------

Thanks - I took a better look and indeed the original labels are there in great shape, and specify monel. Interesting.---------

Thanks David. How does one determine whether the metal is Monel?---------

Just got a 1974 Mark II. Plan to enjoy this summer renovating it to be the way I want, then in the water next year. Looking at the fuel tank, which appears to be original. I am suprised with how good it looks on the outside, but 33 years...

1. I've been through the forum archives, but wanted to get more opinions. I plan to at least pull the sender and check/clean out the interior.
2. Someone wrote that the tank is just a hair too wide to get it out of the starboard locker. True?
3. Has anyone checked the original tank and determined it to be safe at this age?
4. Where would one get a replacement for the cylindrical tank? I have local welding shops, but not sure about the round shape.

Thanks.---------

Hello, I have a Mk II and would be interested. What price are you asking, where are you located, and what is the history of that rudder? You can email me through the forum if you register. Thank you.---------
