Bilge Blues

the MKII I have now has the standard bilge with small, to my hands anyway, openings to access the bolts and bilge. I do remember though, at one time, seeing on this site, an owner describing how they cut away portions of the fiberglass supporting the wood bilge covering, with no adverse consequences. By adverse I mean putting the wood covering back in place, then inadvertently stepping on it, and your foot cracking the wood and falling straight into the bilge. If anyone has experience in this please let me know. The reason I ask is that I am re-installing a bilge pump and want some more room to access, and evaluate which pump will fit and which to use. Thanks everyone.
