Brian,
Are you looking for a Mk V to cruise or race? Age and health make me consider selling SMOKE, which you can see in  'Fleet'. You could come to sail her If that would work for you. She's at Bronte Harbour Yacht Club and I race her regularly.  Let me know what you are looking for.
Cheers
Alan

If it's a Mk V then two in the V berth, two (good friends) in the port side seat with the  back-rest installed to enlarge the seat, and one in the quarter berth....so five friendly adults. As Jim says, six is really a no-go!
Good luck!

#4 Re: General discussion » windlass » 2015-01-12 08:41:56

One of my present crew, who used to race gainst me in his Mk 1V,  bought an Aloha 32 and installed a windlass in 'deference to his back'.  I spoke to him and here are some of his thoughts.
He installed a Lewmar Pro-Series 1000 (motor goes below deck), but given the size and displacement of a C&C 27 a model 700 should suffice. Go with the horizontal model where the motor drive is above deck, not below, thus avoiding space issues below. It's a classic case of "If you are going to do it, do it right". The cost of installation, cables etc can equal the purchase price of the windlass.  (As David says) Don't cut corners on cable, they are expensive but use what is specified for your windlass. Have separate Up/Down switches, on deck, forward. Use the starter battery for power, thus charging it when heaving the anchor, as the engine will be running. Have the windlass on its own separate breaker. Use an aluminium backing plate to distribute the load on deck. With the locker position on a 27 you may have to mount the windlass aft of the locker hatch, meaning hauling the anchor and rode on deck, then hand feeding it into the locker? Be sure that the anchor chain matches the windlass gypsy. Finally, follow instructions! Your back will say "Thank you"!!!!

#13 Re: General discussion » Enjoy the Summer » 2013-10-29 11:46:50

I have just had a great exchange with Mike Matthews and he asked me to relay his best wishes to all his old C&C 27 friends. 'Wind Horse', after three years with Medecins Sans Frontiers, has a new and caring owner who called Mike for help with his new boat........only to discover that he was talking to her previous owner. The new owner re-christened her to 'Wind Horse',....what a happy event.
Mike is busy with his several BMW motor bikes, and has entered  the 30th running of the famous 'LA-Barstow-LasVegas Ride', nearly 500 miles across the desert in two days....on motor bikes!!    You can see all about this form of enjoyable physical torture on Google. He did it last year, but says this time is the last time.....Mike was in St John's, NL earlier this year and had a great time, so says he will be back next year. He sounds the same cheerful Mike of old, it was fun finding him again.
Alan of SMOKE 1984 Mk V 002

6 December, 2013. An update to confirm that Mike completed that desert ride, as did his BMW bike. He  is now back home recovering from his exertions and again asks that I relay his best wishes to you all.

#14 Re: General discussion » manufacture location » 2013-10-26 13:47:34

Thanks Chris, the good news is that you love the boat. How clear is the HIN on your transom? If showing its 40 years of life you should open a bottle of (red) wine, burn the cork a bit and rub the blackened end over the HIN. Now clean the surface area around the number with a blackboard eraser and you have that HIN in clear, black letters. Any change to the one you reported?
In addition to your upper shrouds, do you have single lower shrouds,, or two each side? As you will have read, that change is a split between Mk 1 and Mk11.
The 167 or 215 number puzzle is just that.....
Good luck....... now drink the wine.

#15 Re: General discussion » manufacture location » 2013-10-25 13:27:45

Chris, if you go to "Guide to Marks" then click on "Hull Identification Number" you should find the facts you need. Also helpful is the section on "Evolution", which tells you the
HIN's of all 27's.
Your HIN is located at the top of the starboard side of the transom of your boat.

#16 Re: General discussion » Loos Rig Gauge » 2013-06-10 12:40:27

Dean, I use my Loos gauge on SMOKE, but she is a Mk V, so perhaps not so relevant to your Mk III. I go to 34 on both uppers and lowers, with the intermediates just hand tight.

Lawrence,  It seems that Mark V toilets keep coming up.......  so go to 'search' and  then to 'toilet leak' as the subject and you will find all sorts of wisdom and frustration for your evening's entertainment.

#21 Re: General discussion » Good Old Boat Gives C&C Nod over Catalina and Ericsson » 2013-03-02 02:45:25

A while back there was a thread about boat weight. It referred to Mk V's, but Mk I,II,III and IV's real weights may be just as uncertain. The Mk V's were a little over 4600 lbs according to C&C brochures, but a real, measured example was over 6100 lbs. The length and sail area are probably correct, so which displacement number should be used when comparing the potential performance of similar types of boats?  Do those other two makes of 27's have more certain displacements?

Many thanks for your thoughts on Garhauer.  Discovering that 'To Life' is equipped with them is praise indeed. I met one of the two founders (the -hauer part of the name) at the Boat Show, both were machinists by training, and sailors. It is now run by the next generation of the founding families, who sail, providing test beds for their ideas.
I liked the look and feel of their blocks. They differ from the more standard units we use, but when the need arises I will certainly try one.

#24 Re: General discussion » Mast base blocks » 2013-02-18 12:55:31

Thanks Tim but SMOKE is a Mk V so has her original mast plate with built-in mounts for 8 blocks. It is the Garhauer blocks that I'm curious about.  I wanted to see if anyone had used, or seen someone else use, them. They are different from the more usual blocks we use,  Garhauer is based in Upland, California. I have their latest catalogue and price list which I picked up at the Toronto Boat Show, and it shows several sizes of mast  plates ready to go.

Has anyone seen or used Garhaur blocks or organizers please? There was a fine display of them at the Toronto Boat Show last month, hence the question.
