excellent advice, David. I've had a few water in gas episodes, and that could be a cause. Takes a pretty long hose to get back to the transom, no? Located pretty close to deck joint?

I have a Mk III with wheel steering. Sure would be more comfortable to have a seat while cruising. Anyone know of aftermarket seat kit that attaches to rear stanchions? thanks

OK. Now that temp is above 0, I studied the boom. I see I do have provision for reefing line pulleys at each end of boom. Excuse naive question, but how do I thread reefing line through the boom (PO must have removed). Have thought of a gravity assisted approach where i climb some stairs, put boom vertical and drop line through.

Another ditto. Tried 5/16 and too big. 1/4 is the one. Perhaps our colleague who was pretty firm about 5/16 had a retrofit somewhere along the line? I used graphite version based on what my favorite marine store sells - but he did warn not to use in salt water. I dont plan to sail past Great Lakes.

Appears I am missing the pulleys on the boom. Are these internal within the boom? When i get to boat, i will take a closer look to see how they might install.

Well, save the airfare, and just get a good surveyer. All on this forum are convinced C&C is amazing design, and you cant go wrong, except for all the stuff a good surveyer can find with the passing of 30 years.

I purchased moisture meter to confirm some trouble spots spotted by survey. Good investment, but adds to list of future projects.
We had biggest issues around genoa tracks. Worth a close look since a lot of forces applied, and based on this forum, does seem to be a common water intrusion point. Check the windows too with many recent discussions here.

Looks like i have to take on stuffing box re-stuffing. I'm getting a drip every second when in gear.
I have C&C27 III. i want to get right materials in advance but hear packing could be 1/4" or 3/16" (or something else). Is there a C&C standard?

To close loop. Moyer did an overnight shipment to States and i picked up there. New pump on boat.
By the way, new pump did seem to solve water in oil problem i was having, at least hope so. seals had failed on Orberdorfer

Usual last drama before launch - scheduled mid-week. Mechanic says A4 water pump housing (raw water, late model) is cracked and need new unit.
Any ideas where to source new or used in Toronto? I could get from Moyer but i need fast. Thanks.

Springtime surprise after C&C27 long winter nap. Squealing coming from Cutlass bearing (I think). Although it does seem to stop when rpms come up.
List of other projects is too long to take this on just now -- so having mechanic coming to take a look -- but he wants to know shaft size in advance. I am away from boat for a few days -- so wonder if shaft size is standard with 1980 vintage with Atomic 4.
BTW, anyone out there have favorite Toronto area mechanic? Called James Kudoo for this one.

My intent is to take the lazy way out, at least for this year, since I have limited winterizing time available. I'm trying to keep cuts to area under Genoa tracks, and thus opening up a series of “rectangles” and then digging as far back as possible with ad hoc digging tools.
Despite wet core, there is no sign of de-lamination -- although some hairline shallow spider web cracks on surface.
Question i'm pondering if dig and fill is “strong enough”? I can dig out at least 3 inches or so away from G-tracks in bad spots. Have to believe that it will be stronger than last few seasons.

Hi. I have been through David W's thoughtful piece in Black Arts on Genoa Track replacement and repacking balsa core w epoxy around hardware fasteners.
Problem that I have is much more extensive moisture and balsa decay.
Approach taken so far is to cut a series of rectangles (about 4 inches long by 1/2 in. wide) in the deck under where the G-track is to be re-bedded. Through these rectangles, and a variety of adhoc tools, i have been able to dig out old, wet, decayed balsa, in some cases leading me to excavate 4 inches or more from the track location.
I will spend more more hours digging, and eventually plan to refill deck cavities with epoxy (i feel like a dentist dealing with some really bad teeth).
Questions for you are:
1) Is this approach "good enough"? I assume after refilling core, epoxy mixture will certainly be lots stronger than rotten balsa (or air). The C&C wont be used for high stress racing, but don't want G-track to go flapping in 15 knots of wind on weekend cruise. Cosmetics are not high priority.
2) Fishing through the rectangles to extract old balsa is not perfect. What is risk of leaving some wet/decayed balsa some inches from G-tracks. I assume highest forces will be near G-tracks, not inches away.

Since there appears to be online interest, here are a few more tidbits from article:
"Since these boats (C&C 27, Catalina 27, Ericson 27) are designed to show a good turn of speed around a racecourse, it's worth looking at the performance ratios. In terms of displacement/length (D/L) ratio, which measures the relative weight of the boat, the C&C at 265 and the Catalina at 297 have a distinct edge over the Ericson at a fairly high 342. For acceleration in a puff or out of a tack, the C&C would have the edge over the other two.
The C&C also has an advantage with its high sail area/displacement ratio (SA/D) of 17.6 compared the Catalina's 15.3. Even though their sail areas are almost equal, the Catalina's heavier displacement (by more than a 1,000 pounds) is a distinct disadvantage, especially in light air."
The author, Rob Mazza, used to work at C&C. I'm sure that does not bias his view in favor of C&C. He is just smart.

I just received my "Good Old Boat" March/April Edition. Their featured boat was an Catalina 27, but they did a compare against C&C Mk1/2 and Ericson.
Appears our loved C&C got the nod. "For acceleration in a puff or out of a tack, the C&C would have the edge over the other two. ....The conclusion here is that the C&C would have a distinct advantage in light air, upwind and down with a higher SA/D ratio and faster acceleration. However, as the breeze builds, the C&C will have to reef first...
I would commend you to a subscription of "Good Old Boat." Lot's of good tips for the rest of us that don't have boats fresh out of the boat show.

I made a visit to winter storage yesterday in Toronto. I found ice in the bilge. As part of winterizing, I put in a few inches of -50 RV antifreeze, but water must have seeped in. No freezing in head, and other places RV used. Top few ccs in bilge was solid ice, but bottom still fluid.
I plan to return with heat gun later in week and get all cleaned out.
Question is, what do I look for in terms any signs of damage. Any others had any bad experiences with icy bilge?
