backstay tension

Has anyone attached a manunal or hydraulic backstay to a Mark III?  I also found this piece of paper with the other papers indicating that this rig should not have any extra tensioning - AND - if not how are we/you moving the draft?

Re: backstay tension

Back stay tension is a tricky question.... some C&C 27's have a thick mast and others have a more bendable mast..... My MKlll likes to be sailed loose, thus I only use the back stay when it blows over 20 knots...... you can easily make one up if you have a split back stay by using two small blocks joined with a small shackle and then a light weight 4:1 tackle set up..... you do not need hydraulics on a 27 foot boat.   You can have a rigger or sailmaker split your back stay but you will need to add two attachment points on your aft deck or your could tie it into the toe rail.

Re: backstay tension

Thanks.  I guess that answers the question, that the 27 - III did not come with an adjustable backstay BUT has to be modified for one.  Dean

Re: backstay tension

This is a question I haven't seen discussed here before and since I have the only 27' which races in our club , I've been pretty well left on my own to experiment and I've often wondered if I'm heading in the right direction on this issue. On my Mk 111, there is an older type "screw" with a ratchet handle by which the backstay can be shortened in length by ~ 2+ inches to adjust the backstay tension (and consequently the forestay tension)  between 'loose' and quite 'tight' as the wind increases ( I don't do anything scientific in measuring tension-- I just do a "feel" thing).
I have the forward lower shrouds set somewhat tighter than the aft lowers and consequently, as the masthead moves aft under increasing backstay tension , I am able to induce a bit of mast bend in high winds to help depower the main a little. Works for me, but now, having shared my technique, I'll probably get some answers with dire warnings of impending rig failure.
What do others do about adjusting their stay tensions for racing?

Re: backstay tension

The "27" is no different than any other boat when racing. Backstay tension is like shifting another gear in certain instances.
I have a split backstay that I have used while racing since the early 80's and have never damaged the boat or rig by using it.
However, I do suggest that initially you have someone up at the forestay , shaking if fore and aft as another person tensions the backstay. Once the forestay becomes tight stop the tensioning and mark with tape on the split stays this point just below the tensioning wheels. This will be your reference for max backstay tension. I was warned by C&C years ago that after this point your only compressing the mast down through the cabin top [ definitely not a good thing ] and also bending the boat !!! [ also not recommended ]

Cheers and good luck racing !!! Let us know how your making out in the future over there!
