Need C& C - ID help

I am considering buying a C& C that has been described by the owner as a 1986,  wheel steered, has a 3 1/2 foot draft, Disp of 4800 lbs, 8 HP  Yanmar diesel. Are there any inherent problems areas with this boat that I should look for? Owner experience in put & appreciated.

Re: Need C& C - ID help

Well, it sounds like a C&C 27 MK V (sometimes called a MK IV outside of Ontario) with a shoal draft.
You can see the original sales brochure at <A href="http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/index1.htm">http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/index1.htm</A>
The normal draft is 4'10".  The shoal draft version has a shorter rig and less sail area.  If you intend to race the deeper draft is a better choice.  Note: if it has a winged keel it could be a Wave 26 - same boat except for the keel. See <A href="http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/index1.htm">http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/index1.htm</A>
And, you can see a review of the MK V at <A href="http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/index1.htm">http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/index1.htm</A>
C&C built most MKVs with tillers, so the wheel version is a bit hard to find.
I reccomend a surveyor wiuth a good moisture meter.  Look for wet deck core around the mast, the baby stay and the chainplates.  Check the chainplates inside for leaks, and check the baby stay chain plate for leaks, and check the base of the bulkhead under the baby stay - if it leaked the water runs down and rots the base of the bulkhead.  Every 27 MKV I have seen has had deck problems in those areas - but if it is caught early its not too big a deal.
Check the hull for blisters - I have a dozen on my boat which has nothing on it but VC17.  And check the rudder for blisters too.
If the windows are not leaking now - they will.  If you buy the boat dozens of owners are waiting to share their particular repair method - some of which seem to work.
Aside from that it should be problem free.  Its a great boat to sail, very lively, fast, and stiff in a breeze.  I love mine.  You can email me at <A href="mailto:jcwente@rogers.com">jcwente@rogers.com</A> if you have more questions.
