Roger:
You may want to look at one other engine, it is kabota based and it has the same mounting as the atomic 4 engine.. It is called Beta(they are produced in Endland, but available many places).... they make a 13 hp that is a drop in(you can do it yourself if you are so inclined), but remember with any diesel you are going to change your propeller as well..modify your fuel system etc... I looked into it but rebuilt my A4 instead.

Re: Yanmar, Kubota or Perkins.

Thanks.
I have a YSM12 Yanmar in my C&C 27 right now. I want to replace it with a Bigger engine and I know Yanmar dosen't make the 2 cylinders 2GM20 anymore. I am looking for a 3 cylinder but not sure it will fit into the engine compartement.  Do you also know if the engine compartement of the Mark 111 and the mark 1 are the same?

Re: Yanmar, Kubota or Perkins.

The Yanmar 2GM series no longer exists but it has a replacement. The new motor is the YM series, an updated quieter and more efficient version. The exhaust now exits the back of the motor from the opposite side.

Hi,
We have replaced the Atomic 4 with the 3ym30 on our MK1.  The engine fit well, although it is a tight fit.  Having some over heating problems at present, but we are thinking it may be related to the prop...engine seems to be working fine.

Hi Mike.
It is not install yet. We were wayting the end of this season to remove the YSM12. We will be able then to see witch engine will fit. We hesitate between Yanmar 3Ym20 or 30 and Volvo Penta. Do you have a preference between these two brand?
Thanks

Hi
Y would like to know if the Mark1 and Mark III have the same engine compartment dimensions? I am very interesting in a 3YM30 or the equivalent in Volvo Penta.
Thanks

Re: Yanmar, Kubota or Perkins.

I am just about finished with having a 3YM20 installed in my 1972 MkI replacing a dead A4.  When it is finished I plan on putting pictures and such in the Black Arts area.  The 20 just fit into my engine compartment.  I am looking forward to putting it in the water here soon.  I live below N31  <IMG src="http://www.cc27association.com/f3/toast/emoticons/icon_smile.gif" border=0>.  I have heard good things about Yanmar and Kubota but have not heard anything about the Perkins in the C&C.   Mark

Re: Yanmar, Kubota or Perkins.

Iris,
I have just bought the Beta Marine Diesel engine and it will be delivered the end of March 2008 (air shipped from England - no duty charges, just sales tax). You said it is a "drop in" for the 10GM Yanmar that I am replacing, is that correct? If so, do you have any experience with this re-powering or know anyone who would be able to give me some advice or send me some pictures? I have a C&C27 MarkV #584 built in R.Island.
thanks

I have a C&C27 Mark V which was brought up from Maryland. I believe the Yanmar 1GM10 was exposed to salt water. The engine is very noisy, vibrates more than I like (have folding prop and know when it is open fully) and to me is not very environmentally friendly. I have just purchase a Beta Marine BZ482 (13.9HP) which is built in England. The engine is about the same size and weights a little less. Question: Does anyone have any experience with re-powering their boat. If so, would you be willing to share your experience with me.

Re: Yanmar, Kubota or Perkins.

I was at the Toronto Boat show and was checkling out a Volvo-Penta saildrive unit. The engine attached to the saildrive was painted Volvo blue but the builders model plate said it was a Perkins.  Any idea what's up with that?

Re: Yanmar, Kubota or Perkins.

BY the way.  When shopping for a replacement for an A-4, I found this company in Florida, that converts Kubota engines like Beta, but here in the States,, so the shipping is much less.  Also less expensive.  Two years ago, they were selling the 13 HP model for undet $5K.  That was new , with fresh water cooling and instrument panel.

Re: Yanmar, Kubota or Perkins.

Ahoy Iris,
I'm glad to hear you rebuilt your atomic 4.  I have a MKII, Sea Robin, and lusted after a diesel, but after considering the availabilty of gas over diesel, and the cost of diesel (I have a diesel truck) I decided to keep the A4.  I recently moved the boat up river and was surprised at the fuel consumption, pleasantly surprised.  I motored along at idle or one click up and motored for 2 days, 8 or so hours a day, and didn't burn nearly the fuel I thought I would.  So here's to the old reliable Atomic 4, they don't explode, run forever and are cheap to rebuild and service (and they have 30 horsepower, cool huh).
