Whisker pole

I have and mark V and thinking about installing a whisker pole. I would use it with my 150 Genoa. What size pole would I need, Length, dia or any think else. Is this a good or bad Idea. What end should be on the pole. Thanks Kenny

Re: Whisker pole

Hi Kenny,
I think the best type of pole is adjustable in length so it can be used with all the sails. The pole I have is a "Forespar" and about 1 1/4 inch diam.Works fine!

Re: Whisker pole

I use a whisker pole on my Mark V when sailing downwind or on a broad reach.  It is very helpful in increasing the boat speed.  Mine is a telescoping pole that extends to 11 feet, and is about 2-1/4" in diameter.  This pole is actually from a C&C 25 that I once owned.  I find that the 11' extension is the minimum for a 153% genoa; longer may be better.  Also, anything less than this in diameter may be too weak for a Mark V if the wind happens to pipe up.  Sometimes in heavy air I use my spinnaker pole as a whisker pole.

Re: Whisker pole

I use a forespar on my MK V as well - works fine, though the jaws are a bit stiff.
If you are racing with it you are restricted to LP x 0.8.  On a MKV with a 153% headsail the LP = 15.40 ft and the max whisker pole length is 12.32 ft.  We have our pole marked to the max we are allowd to extend when racing.
