Blue smoke in exhaust

I noticed some blue smoke in the exhaust. Can't say that I have noticed it before, just bought the boat at the end of last summer and didn't really see any smoke till now.

Just wondering if this is an issue, or could be an issue?

Re: Blue smoke in exhaust

Sorry about that, I should have mentioned it.

Atomic 4 , most likely original engine, 1971. I just don't remember seeing any smoke last season (bought the boat at the end of the season, or even seeing any smoke this season.  I did fill up the oil to the "full" mark a couple of weeks ago, and did not go over the fill line. If that helps.

Re: Blue smoke in exhaust

The type of oil you use can make a difference. Moyer Marine seems to like straight 30 weight (I use Castrol Heavy Duty SAE 30), or 10W30. When we purchased our 27, 10 years ago, the owner had been using a synthetic, and our engine didn't like it! She was smoking and left a nasty oil slick behind the boat. We switched to the Castrol, and the problems went away, and we have a happy engine now.Bill Salton

Re: Blue smoke in exhaust

Hi Bill,

Thanks for replying!

That is a very interesting observation about the oil and thinking back about it, I did add oil and to be honest, I can not remember what type of oil I put in, most likely something on sale. I did not have smoke in the beginning of the season and later on I did, most likely after I added the oil!

For this season its too late to do anything about it since the boat is out, but I was planning on draining the oil in the spring and start with a fresh batch.

I will most definitely be using the Castrol Heavy Duty SAE 30, as you suggested!

Thank you for taking the time to respond to this, I appreciate it.  Roy

Re: Blue smoke in exhaust

Hi

You will find a debate on the Moyer site.  Some like 15-40 Rotella.  Claims of higher oil pressure.

Original A4 manual and Don Moyer himself points to 30W.    I use the Castrol 30W and works great for me.

Hope all clears up.

Re: Blue smoke in exhaust

Hi Steve,

Thanks for commenting. Now I feel bad that the boat is on the hard for the winter, very curious to see how the Castrol 30W will work, etc.

I will be doing some more reading of the manual as well.

Thanks again!
