Sadly, it is time for me to part with my beloved MK V. This has certainly been the best boat I have ever owned, but changes in lifestyle mean that I do not have the time to use it as it should be. It is time for another family to enjoy cruising and racing on this wonderful boat.
I will post pictures soon, but I am sure you all know what these look like. Mine is hull number 45, and was until a decade ago part of the lake Ontario fleet, I believe under the name "Wind Stalker". It was brought to Long Island to race on the South Shore, did that for 3 years, and then I brought it to Long Island Sound.
PO lowered the keel, redid the adhesive and bolts, and had new barrier coat applied.
Some of the things I have done include:
Rebuild Transmission (It blew a seal, so I had to take it off anyway)
new cutless bearing
new prop bearings (it has the folder)
new stern tube and stuffing box
new fuel filter setup, fuel lines, cleaned the tank
new head hoses (replaced with odorsafe)
New batteries and cables
Updated mast wiring connectors
New lifelines
rebedded grabrails and babystay chainplate (including reaming and epoxy filling deck holes, and setting in butyl)
refinished all exposed wood two years ago (although I am very disappointed with Rustoleum Varnish.. already showing deterioration with proper care... back to Epifanes)
Varnish over epoxy for the tiller
replaced steering compasses both sides
Replaced pressurized alcohol stove with Origo burner
Rebuilt bilge pump
rebuilt sink hand pump
replaced the engine control cables
replaced the fuel tank sender
acid flushed the engine water system
replaced the engine water hoses
replaced the water pump
Impeller replaced every two years
Engine zincs replaced as needed
and more...
Like any "experienced" boat, it does have a few issues...
the instruments are elderly, and right now are being flakey, choosing to work or not as they see fit. I believe this is due to corrosion at the masthead connector for the anemometer, since I am reading bad signals from there, and they are all connected (they are all autohelm/1st gen raytheon ) There is also a loose ground wire someplace that causes interruptions when the motor is on. I continue to try to track that down, it is just a matter of checking dozens of screws to find the loose one.
The engine is pretty much perfect....if you wanted to improve it in any way, you might want to rebuild/get a new injector for next season, as it could burn a bit cleaner than it does right now. But it starts every time and moves the boat along beautifully.
The boat comes with a dacron main with a single reef (single line reefing is setup for 2 reef points) and a 135 cruising genoa on a ProFurl titanium furler. Furler has a dual slot foil for quick headsail changes on the race course.
There are also a set of experienced but still quite good kevlar sails for racing, Two spinnakers, and a storm jib.
Like usual, everything is led back to the cockpit, which is equipped with Andersen 2-speed self-tailers. I single-hand this boat all the time, and use the spinnaker myself as well...the boat is so well-mannered, this is easy to do.
