Greetings Everyone,
New to boat ownership. I just received a MK III from an estate donating to our newly formed Seascout unit. The boat was an “old tinkerer’s” weekly racer. It sat on hard stand for at least a year when I received it last month. The plan is to trailer it out of NYC area up to family farm six hours upstate for stem-to-stern refit. I had it lifted to the water and motored it five miles to another boatyard. It sat pierside in water for three weeks with no leaks before lifting it. Unfortunately the separately donated trailer failed to fit the fin keel so we placed it back in water to regroup and that’s where we’re at right now.
We don’t know the amount of loving Starlight will need when we dig into it. We’re lining up a surveyor now to get a worklist started, see if there are any red flags, and possibly get aggressive with transport solutions.
Plan A transport solution is to acquire a trailer (own/rent) that will fit the keel and haul it to farm in the next week. The farm will be our wintering yard.
Plan B is to have it hauled to destination for hard stand work with intent to procure used trailer that fits for future winter lift out and storage utility at farm.
Plan C is to preemptively remove keel for separate transport allowing donated trailer to transport/store ballasted hull.
As I said, I’m new to boat ownership. I’m open to advice on how to accomplish any of the three options especially trailer procurement and keel removal/reinstallation.

Removing the keel (if possible) sounds like it would add a huge amount of extra work to your refit project. Especially given that there are no leaks.

Hope you have found a solution for transport.
Can you have the trailer modified to fit the C&C 27? Most likely the cheapest and best long term solution.
There are also commerical carriers who have trailers with adjustable fittings to keep the boat secure.
Glad to hear the Sea Scouts are getting a sailboat. I worked with our local Sea Scouts in the past.
