Sylvain, could you please provide additional details or photos of your seat setup.  How did you mount the teak steps? I also have a Mark III and want a cockpit seat  Thnx Tom

Chriswheat and contributing Forum members. Problem finally solved!
Review: Engine was overheating-200 degrees plus. Checked impeller. It had failed. Found and removed impeller and small impeller pieces in water pump opening. Replaced impeller and thermostat (Moyer Marine) and replaced all cooling system hoses. Still overheating. Removed engine access sideplate, vacuumed grit out of opening. No impeller pieces found in side engine compartment. Checked water flow into exhaust manifold-very little water flow. Engine still overheating 200 degrees plus.
Closer inspection of impeller cavity/hose connection. Probed opening with small steel/hooked pick and pulled out small/folded over rubber impeller piece that was blocking adequate cooling water flow. Replaced impeller. Engine now running at 160 degrees. Good sailing again!
Thanks for your suggestions and support throughout this frustrating problem.
This Forum is so helpful. Thanks again!

[What makes the Forum really useful is when we get follow-up like this. Contributors' conjecture about the problem and personal troubleshooting steps are an important step toward a fix here, but a detailed description of the on-engine troubleshooting steps and achievement of a real solution are invaluable. Thank you, Tom - Admin]

thnx Chriswheat.  Checked both exit then entry hoses to exhaust manifold and found very little water flow in both. It would appear problem is situated before the entry hose. I have ordered thermostat from Moyers and expect delivery this week.

Please explain how to reverse flush. Aries is overheating.  I have replaced the failed impeller and removed the thermostat and checked the hoses for blockage and continue to have overheating.
Suggestions?

[Google the phrase 'reverse flush atomic four' to get a selection of detailed instructions on the task, ranging from acid flushing through pressure flushing to simply backwashing. - Admin]

Marcus, This morning rotated alternator to allow access to side plate. Successfully removed the side plate after applying "releasall lubricant" and carefully wrenching/ratchetting off the 8 bolts. Did not find any large broken impeller pieces but did vacuum out much gritty residue from the chamber. Cleaned off the inside of the plate and cleaned out the "T" connection. No large chunks found. I have been replacing the hoses and clamps as I continue.
Tomorrow I plan to reinstall the side plate and reconnect hoses and alternator/belt.
Question: Is the length of the inlet hose from the seacock to the water pump significant? mine is 3 feet long but only travels a vertical distance of 6 inches. Should this hose be shorter?

Tom

Marcus, thanks for your detailed reply/suggestions. I have just returned home after another frustrating exchange with Aries. I checked the new impeller and it looks fine. I have removed the thermostat and tightened the alternator belt which was loose. She is still overheating and very little water is exiting the exhaust pipe when the engine is operating.
I will follow your instructions tomorrow moning. I plan to remove the alterrnator to access the hose between the alternator and the engine block. I will check that hose for blockage.
Should I consider removing the side plate to check for blockage?

Marcus
This is my second season with "Aries" 1976 Mark III. The engine began overheating last week and I replaced the failed impeller which had all rubber wheels totally stripped. I was unable to remove all the broken pieces in the system (removed all hoses and flushed them out). The engine continues to overheat. I don't know where the cover plate is but suspect it should be removed/cleaned. Suggestions appreciated.

Jeff, thanks for your helpful suggestions. I will begin problem diagnosis next week weather permitting.
I plan to replace the in-mast wiring and install a chartplotter as well. This is my second season with Aries and I look forward to sailing to the north channel of Georgian Bay this summer.
When will you launch Clockwork this season?

Hi Marcus. Thanks for the welcome and the suggestions. Aries is lying on the hard at the Collingwood Yacht Club. I hope to identify/solve the problem before she is lifted in. I will check the propeller shaft first to see if it is true. The vibration is minimal at low RPMs so I am hoping that it is not a prop problem. I have checked both blades and they open and move freely. I will remember your suggestion re throttling down to idle, into reverse  then throttling up. Some of my club members have offered to help so I will have the cutlass bearing checked too.
It is terrific to have Association members who have practical suggestions.

Brand new member to Association/Forum. Look forward to helpful info.
Purchased Aries last year. Unable to perform sea trial before purchase. Encounter terrible vibration when RPMs increased when underway. Atomic 4 engine, folding prop, wheel steering.

Steve, I do not know the Travasak sleep system. What do you know about this system?
I find a duvet/comforter over an under sheet to be the most comfortable and warm enough. A sleeping bag tends to be confining and frequently awkward.
