#1 General discussion » When to reduce head sail after reefing? » 2004-08-02 12:38:26

I had a terrific 10 hour run a week ago in 13-15 knots of wind. It gusted to 18 - 20 knots what seemed like hundreds of times. I had a reef in the main and left the furling head sail all the way out all the time. It was a beam reach for most of the time with an off shore wind and less than 2 foot waves. The boat sailed beautifully all day. The boat could have gone on forever but my fatigue level was tested and now I know how much I can take.
My question; given the design of a C&C 27 when should you consider reducing the head sail? The power for the boat seems to come in most part from the head sail, and stability does not seem to be a problem up to the 20 knot point with the full head sail out.
I'm newer to the boat and would appreciate input from the more experianced.

You will find the weather stripping on the home page at Holland Marine http://www.hollandmarine.com/
I checked several places and they have the best price.$2.89/ ft.
The plexi I sourced at "Ace Glass" a glass and mirror company in Scarborough (Toronto). I thought it would be easily available at many spots like auto glass shops however it takes a bit of phoning around before you find the right place. If you are in Toronto area call Ace. I belive they charged about $65-$70 for tinted plexi glass. The Boat Show suppliers I checked with were all significantly higher. The butyl tape that installs between the fiber glass and plexi glass I got at an auto glass place for free.

Thanks for the tip Bob
Not only do they (Holland Marine) have it on their web site. It is also less expensive than the other supplier I sourced it at.
Cheers!

I have a C&C 27 III with original fixed aluminum port frames. I am installing new plexi. I have the butyl tape and new plexi. Does anyone have a line on the weather stripping that is inserted in between the aluminum frame and the plexi. I am in Toronto. Have sourced it at one place however was surprised at the price.

Interesting! I looked at Watco Oil and it appears to be made for the Marine Teak application. What sort of surface preperation is required? I am assuming it is 1975 Varnish on the interior.

I'm a newbie looking for advice from those more experienced. This is our first boat. It's in great shape just needs polishing up. I've completely emptied the boat and want to get to work on the wood, both interior and exterior. What is best varnish or Cetol. Some of the interior wood around the sinks and companionway is discoloured by water. Will cetol mask this? As the veneer is so thin what prep work is recommended? Any advice or experiences would be appreciated
