#29 Re: General discussion » Mark 2 Mast » 2012-10-17 23:03:52

Update:

Took the mast down yesterday.

There is a 3/8 in bolt going through the tang/spreader assembly.

The port lower shrouds seemed to have been "pulled" down which sheared the rivets and the bolt wore down the port bolt hole on the mast.

Right now the plan is to drill out the tang and mast to the next larger size and replace the bolt with a larger bolt.

Sorry this was the only photo that came out okay.

GPS selective availability (SA) was removed before 9/11.  If not, it would never have been remove after 9/11.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Positioning_System

I used Navmatics charts and tides for Great Lakes on an iPad as a back up for sailing the thousand islands this summer.

GPS was very accurate, charts were not as accurate but it gave access to Active Captain for anchorage information.

The iPad battery lasted almost 10 hours so that was seldom a problem.

#31 Re: General discussion » Mark 2 Mast » 2012-09-18 04:08:42

I just inspected my spreaders and on one spreader base does not seem to have any rivets on the diamond shaped base to the mast.

There is a gap.  I am not sure what is happening here.  I will probably be taking the mast down to inspect and repair.

Has anyone seen anything like this?

ditto.  I tried 5/16, but it was too big.

Mine packing nut came apart remarkably easily.

My 1975 boat measured 10-12 mm ... about 1/2 inch.

My starboard deck was done about 3 years ago.  See pictures.

#35 Re: General discussion » Atomic 4 Operating Temp » 2012-05-28 15:00:10

If there is white stream coming out of the exhaust, then she is probably over heating.

I generally run at 160 to 180 tops.

This year my a4 was overheating (180 +) and I had to reverse flush and that seemed to stopped the over heating.

Updated June 13.  No more overheating.

#36 Re: General discussion » shaft packing size? » 2012-05-14 02:50:43

This season I finally replaced my packing and I got two rings of 1/4 inch and I think I can get a third ring in later after it has compressed a bit.

One drop ever 45 seconds.  Not bad.

#37 Re: General discussion » Head replacement » 2012-05-10 06:11:34

Update.  After some research it looks like I had a few problems.

1. The hose may not have been aligned square.
2. I heated the hose in boiling water to make the ends more pliable.  The hose became soft like gummy bears.
3. My 1975 holding tank inlet was too small and I ended up sealing it with silicon.

Seems bone dry on both ends of the hose now.

Mounted on the new head to the floor with 5/16 lug bolts.

Another problem

I have a new Jabsco compact head and new sanitation hose 1/1/2 inches.  I have two clamps and fairly tightly fitted.

Water is leaking from under the hose - between the plastic nipple and the hose, on both ends (head discharge and holding tank intake)

The hoses fit tightly.  The one at the head is tighter.  But water is coming out on both ends, under the hose.

What gives ?

Okay, I took off the old head and see there seems to be a good piece of plywood underneath.

I just rebuit my Wilcox Citation to discover a leak in the pump housing. I have enough of this.  Going for a new head.

Can someone tell me if I can just fill in the holes for the Wilcox mounting and then drill new holes for the Jabsco?

How do you get the new screws or studs for the Jabsco in to the platform.

Has anyone calculated the Gross Tonnage of a 27 ?

I estimated 5.2 tons from this site.

I need this to fill in a Radio Station License application.

#42 General discussion » resonant anchor line noise in V-berth » 2011-10-11 01:54:01

wrapper
Replies: 1

Having spent most of my sleeping time in the main cabin berth of my MK III at anchor, I have not noticed any noise from the anchor rode.

Now when sleeping in the V-berth, I am  constantly hearing much noise from anchor rode and maybe other things that I have not been able to identify.  When I go to the main cabin or above, I cannot hear any of the offending noise.

I have tried using the fair lead as well as the bow-sprit wheel for the anchor line, but the the noise is still there.

It is clearly a resonance noise.  Just wondering if others are experiencing this.

#43 Re: General discussion » Toe Rail Cleat » 2011-07-04 01:31:51

Here is the mid-ship cleat I was talking about.

http://s949.photobucket.com/albums/ad335/wrapper99/cc27/

It is available from Boathouse.  www.boathouse.ca I believe they are the exclusive distributor.

I hope to leave this link up perpetually or admin can put it somewhere permanently.

I have been using small boat on my MK111 for seven years and it was one of the "I want" items.

I upgraded with 2470 end cap block to give me 3:1 about four years ago.

I pull from the line from the car and do not quite understand David's situation.

I have wheel steering.

This is a good guide to buy o-rings by size

I have never bought from them, but I use this as a reference to find part numbers to buy from Ackland Granger. They seem to have every O-ring I ever asked them for.  In Montreal, they order from Toronto.
