One of the jobs I've neglected to do forever, has become a New Years resolution-- Now, can someone please tell me how many foot/pounds of torque to apply to the keel bolts when I check them this spring ??

Hi Clare. Thorough search of all the literature, including my owner's manual with a keel diagram, discloses no specific recommendations about keel bolt torque. You might want to contact Mars Keel at 800-381-KEEL; their URL is <A href="http://www.marsmetal.com/newpages/keelhome17.html">http://www.marsmetal.com/newpages/keelhome17.html</A>. I've found them fairly generous with advice in the past. If they do have a recommendation, it might be worth sharing with the rest of us. Cheers.

Further to my previous message, here's the scoop:
Regarding the bolt torque, here are the specs based on bolt size:
1/2" - 90 ft. lbs. , 3/4" - 250 ft.lbs. , 1" - 350 ft. lbs.
Please be careful in tightening as if the bolts are fatigued based on age
this should be taken into consideration.

Last summer we re-torqued our keel bolts (or, more specifically, the nuts on the threaded stainless rods). It is best to do the forward nuts when the boat is in the water, as when it's sitting on the keel, the forward "bolts" are in tension. The aft nuts can be done either in the water or on the cradle. If I recall correctly, there were two nuts of 1.25", and two of 1.5"; I think the larger nuts were on 1" threaded rod. Unfortunately, we needed deep sockets for one of each size and it took us awhile to find someone with deep sockets that large. We torqued them as much as we could with an 18" driver, which was probably less than the 350 ft-lbs suggested above. I doubt they had been re-torqued in at least 10 years. Most of them turned about a quarter turn, though we were able to put more than one full turn on one.Hugh Morrin

Any concerns about leaking after tightening?
I am likely to cautious. Checking that the bolts are tight is highly recommended and I too have been remiss - but the thought of disturbing a seal that to date has been trouble free gives me some apprehension (especially if the torque is done while floating).
Actually, I don't think you are disturbing the seal because the bedding compound that provides the seal is applied where the lead meets the glass, not at the nuts.
I reefed my keel bolts up on the water because there seemed to be more of the stuff than absolutely required in the bilge. I recall I got a quarter- to a half-turn. Much less water came in subsequently.

I noted with interest my friend Hugh Morrin's observation that when we talk about tightening our keel bolts, we're really referring to the other half of the mechanical fastening. At the risk of being accused of being politically incorrect and risking the wrath of the Forum police, I find myself speculating whether we simply prefer to avoid discussion of how much torque is required to tighten our nuts! On a serious note, I must say that I find that as a new 27 skipper, I find the forum invaluable.
