Has anyone found a solution that they particularly like for a permanent boarding ladder on the 27?

Hi Mike,
First of all, I assume we're considering transom mounted S.S. ladders. Just a couple of thoughts--
1. Because the transom has an angle off vertical, make sure the brackets and the 'stand-off' legs allow the ladder to be vertical in use.
2. Despite having to care for the wood, teak steps are much, much easier on the feet than a round S.S. bar if you plan to do as much swimming as we do.
3. Before my wife became a cancer patient, we hopped over the stern rail to use the ladder but two years ago I bought a few "no-weld" 7/8 inch fittings, some tubing, a length of S.S. cable and a Pelican hook and rigged up a gate in the middle of the stern rail to access the ladder. Much easier now for both of us!
4. One last thought. If you single-hand your boat, particularly in adverse weather, rig the latch that holds your ladder in the upward position so that it can be tripped by a line you can trail behind.

I'll echo everything said earlier, plus throw in a photo of the solution that every C&C seems to have: a ladder hinged just below the top of the transom (just below Towser's name, just above Capilano's here), with rubber-footed stand-off legs that bear against the lower edge of the transom when the ladder is down. The only variation is the addition of a further two steps hinged to the bottom of the ladder for those looking for the luxury touch.
The photo is a composite of a photo of my own 27, plus that of another boat that uses a similar solution. Not a 27, obviously, but both were taken for another purpose and while individually they have drawbacks, together they provide a reasonable illustration of the general concept and of its application on a 27.

Thanks Clare and David, Originally I was looking at the Mystic Stainless Foldaway that mounted to the toe rail. That would allow me to use the existing boarding area on my starboard side. But I do single hand and need to rebuild the stern rail anyway. Maybe build a gate into stern rail filled by the ladder in the up position?

I have exactly the opening you describe (sorry the picture is blurred), with a wire gate to close off the stern. You may be able to see in the picture that the ladder is positioned so the bottom rung is just above the gate wire. If you attach a towable safety line to the foot of the ladder and under the wire, it is possible to pop the ladder outside the wire while in the water (see Clare's earlier note about towing a safety line).

Catch me at my boat and I will show you my folding boarding ladder I use on the starboard entry. It has to be deployed for each use - I store it in the lazarrett. Maybe not a good solution for you, but it works great for us. Also I have a suitable used drop down ladder you could mount on your stern - available cheap.

I returned early and managed to get to the boat on Sunday. Wow I thought I would never see that boat with snow on it! The live-aboards claimed that the fairways were frozen over but somehow I'm a skeptic on that issue. I know this 'big deal' about a little snow sounds silly to those of you who keep a boat closer to C&C's home waters but the temp right now is 73, much closer to a normal Christmas day high. Warren, I'll be back around the 22nd. We can look at the ladder then.

Who made the ladder you installed? I cannot make out the details of the installation from the picture - how did you create that top step, or is it part of the ladder? Nice job, thanks for the picture.

The ladder was made by Metal Masters Marine, now gone some 20 years or more. The top step is part of the ladder. There are teak pads on every step. It's a bit high in the water - you have to fold yourself double to get on the bottom step, but otherwise it's a very good ladder.
