#1 Re: General discussion » stiff shifter on atomic 4 » 2015-08-06 02:47:01

Hello Mike,

I encountered the very same issue when adjusting the transmission in our Mk 1.  It slipped under higher loads so I read the manual and made the adjustment.  It's been a few years so I cannot remember the details other than I inadvertently moved the adjustment ring two slots when trying to move it only one.

Apparently this is a common mistake as I called Don Moyer and he suggested this may have happened  after describing to him how hard it was to engage my transmission after making the adjustment.

I adjusted the ring back one slot, reassembled the transmission and tested both the engagement lever force and whether it slipped or not.  The engagement force was significantly less and the transmission no longer slipped.

It has been about three years since I made the adjust and transmission still operates fine.  No slippage even under the higher loads when I need to run at top speed for short period of times when motoring through our channel.

So based on what I read, the experience I had and the advice from Moyer Marine, I'd say you may have the same problem.

Take care,

We are looking for a stanchion eye cap that fits on top and inside the lifeline stanchions.  We have a 1972 C&C 27 and the stanchions are original.  The caps are chromed bronze with eyelet top. Would prefer to use original or similar part if possible.  Does anyone know where to find a replacement part or have an extra used one they would like to sell?  Chrome condition is not important as the chrome on the others is wearing away.  The stanchion is 7/8" O.D. SS tubing and the wall thickness is .45"

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello,

Did the piston damage the head?  Also what is the serial number for the engine?  You can contact me rick.ulam at gmail dot com.  As you can see I changed the email slightly to avoid spam.

Thanks,

#5 Re: General discussion » plexiglass cover plate over control panel » 2013-08-20 00:35:12

Carney Plastics made all new cut to size windows and a plexiglass control panel cover (one that is built into the seating area) for our Mk I.  Very nice work, great prices and easy to work with.  Nice small family business.

For windows I had them cut slightly larger than the ones that were on the boat so I could custom fit with my dremel.  For control panel, I just supplied the old one and they cut to correct size including mounting holes.  Perfect fit.

The previous owner of our 72 Mark I put one in for the very reason you stated.  Nice for checking oil and a few other things in this area.  For example, the propeller shaft and transmission.  He did a nice job installing it.  No leaks.

Dear all,  Noticed that Alan of Smoke mentioned polishing boat as his next project.  This is a good post that describes the process, products and tools needed to achieve nice results.

Removed the shaft and cutlass bearing over the weekend.  Confirmed our boat was delivered without set screws.  Inspected another one in the yard and it does not have any as well.  Appears several came without set screws.

Thank you sony2000. Nice to know there are other boats out there w/o set screws.  Idylln may be another one of them.  Thanks for tip on reinstalling w/o set screws.  Looks like your project is coming along.  Let me know how it goes and if you run into any snags.

#11 Re: General discussion » Cutlass bearing set screws » 2012-04-16 03:55:40

I had previously searched the forum and noticed on 10/22/2006 that Mr. Wooden had removed his bearing and confirmed no set screws were present.  That is the reason why I asked.  Perhaps there were some boats released without set screws.  I don't mean to ask questions that were already covered but in this case the question of set screw vs. no set screw remained unanswered and at least one boat had been produced without set screws.  The boat was checked again over the weekend and we still could not find set screws.  To be sure, I'll remove the shaft and cut the bearing for removal.  If our boat does not have them I can always run a tap to add new ones.  Thank you.

Thank you.  I'll have another look when I visit the boat again.  Hoping to remove the bearing with a custom press tool without removing the shaft.  Don't want to fight the set screws if they are really there.

Are there set screws retaining the cutlass bearing on a 1972 C&C 27?  Could not seem to locate them when I inspected the housing that supports the bearing.

#15 Re: General discussion » In search of a reliable sailboat. » 2011-12-31 11:38:52

Hi Mike,

I looked for the most part of last summer and found a really nice C&C 27 Mk I (hull 211)in Cleveland, Ohio. We bought it from the owner that had it since 1974. It came with everything the owner had collected over the years for the boat including a nice inventory of sails (great bonus).  We had it surveyed, bought it in the fall and are spending the winter cleaning teak, making new cushions and repairing other small things.  After a summer of searching for a "reliable sailboat" and compared to other similar boats of this age, the C&C is my pick. We are really happy with our purchase and looking forward to sailing her on Lake Erie next year.  Be sure to have a compression test done on the Atomic 4 as a minimum (ours checked out at 93-95 PSI for each cylinder).  Better yet, have a trusted mechanic inspect the engine.  And of course, have a survey done when your close.  Have fun!

Cheers,
Rick

#16 Re: General discussion » Mk I window dimensions » 2011-11-29 11:25:54

Hello Chris and Clockwork,

Apologize for the delay in my response.  Looks like there may be different window sizes in these early C&Cs so I better take measurements on mine for approximate dimensions before I cut to the tracing.  We'll be visiting our boat in storage over the next few weeks so we can double check then.

Thanks again,
Rick

Thank you very much Jeff.  This will get us started sourcing the material.  If there is anyone that has or knows of the original drawing dimensions, it would be greatly appreciated.

#18 Re: General discussion » Mk I window dimensions » 2011-11-14 11:37:30

Length and width would be good for buying the material to the rough size needed.  For cutting the windows, I'll probably need to have +- 1/32 along with the dimensions for the corner radius.  Was wondering if there were any prints still available or if anyone has windows or a template from a previous repair.  No rush.  I have all winter to work on this project.  Thank you.

#19 Re: General discussion » Mk I window dimensions » 2011-11-13 22:34:33

Thank you.  Not sure of our hull number yet.  We have the number from the metal tag mounted on the rear of the cockpit but not the one molded into the hull.  Next time we visit the boat, we'll check.

My wife and I just purchased a 1972 Mk I from the second owner that has had the boat since 1974.  Recently the owner replaced the windows installing them with silicone instead of the proper gasket material. Based on this type of repair, I am concerned that windows may not be cut to the correct dimensions.  Does anyone have a template for the windows or know of the proper dimensions that I can use to cut new windows to the original size?

Also the directions that came with the gasket material (South Shore Yachts) do not have drawings or pictures to illustrate proper gasket installation.  Does anyone have pictures that show how to install the external rubber gasket?  I've looked in the "Black Arts" section and do not see pictures of how the gasket is installed.  Apologize if I may have overlooked anything that shows how to install the gaskets.  We are new to the site.
