NicroFico solar-powered vent between mast step and forehatch; replaceed portside fixed port above head with Beckson opening port and exterior rain hood; installed another Beckson opening port in bulkhead above galley. I have the solar vent in extraction mode, so it draws air from both Beckson ports which I leave open. The port on the bulkhead is under the dodger so rain isn't an issue.

Planning to re-bed toerails and thinking of using Dolfinite, a Pettit product, rather than butyl tape. Would appreciate comment from anyone who has used Dolfinite.

#4 Re: General discussion » masthead sheaves Mk 2 » 2016-12-17 22:30:33

Apologies for slow follow-up, but finally retrieved info you requested. When I switched to all-rope a couple of years ago, I found that my 30-year-old sheaves were in poor shape (surprise!). I had seen ads in Good Old Boat for a sheave manufacturer, http://www.zephyrwerks.com, in Washington state. After a couple of email exchanges with the proprieter, Ed Louchard, I ordered three custom-milled Delrin sheaves with brass axle holes. I'm extremely satisfied with the results. Sheave diameter and width were, respectively, 3" and 0.562" and the axle diameter was 0.432". My halyards are 3/8". However, Louchard advises measuring sheaves which he said can vary boat-to-boat. Cost, including shipping was about $105 but they'll outlast me. On the other hand, you can follow up on others' suggestions about having your old ones machined. Season's greetings from snowbound Ottawa.

Planning to keep the wire-to-rope halyards or replace with all-rope? If the latter, I can help/

#7 Re: General discussion » Adding a second battery » 2016-08-23 03:14:18

For what it's worth, working from the premise that having batteries right beside an engine is not a good idea because of heat and vibration, I opted to run appropriately-gauged cable through the space behind my icebox and into the storage area under the portside aft seat. Power is routed through a 1-2-all switch mounted on a panel I installed behind my icebox. The batteries are mounted as close to the centreline as possible. However, I use two Odyssey AGM batteries, one for starter for my Atomic 4 and the other as a house battery. These are smaller than conventional lead-acid batteries but are more than up to my needs in that the A-4, with a displacement of one litre is easy to start, and all my lights, as part of a stem-to-stern rewiring, are LEDs. I use the former battery area to house a waste bin and provide other storage, separated from the engine by a plywood bulkhead.

I installed one last year after a minor toerail modification. Will send you a pix this weekend or early next week (boat's still covered) if you pop me a note via kenpoleatbelldotnet.

Here's Ed's reply 05 April, 2016:

3" x .562" x .432" for 3/8" line is what your order was, copied from the invoice. However, before making up a set for another boat, I have found it helpful to measure the sheaves first, as not every boat of a given make and model has the same configuration.  There is in my experience, quite a bit of variation.
Ed

If memory serves me correctly, the measurements he quotes are, respectively, sheave diameter, sheave thickness, and axle diameter. But, as he says, these can differ boat to boat, so best do your own measuring and deal with him directly. You won't be disappointed.

In March 2015, I offered to pass on information about a shop in the Seattle area which made me some Delrin sheaves when I went the all-rope route. Subsequent brain fade meant that I didn't follow up. Check out http://www.zephyrwerks.com. The proprietor, Ed Louchard, does really nice work and I've been extremely happy with the new sheaves. I have asked him via email (his contact info is on the site) whether he still has my measurements, which I'll be happy to post; otherwise, measure your current metal sheaves and axles, give him your planned line size, and you should have your new sheaves within a couple of week.

Pix? Will email (address?) a couple next week. It sits essentially fore and aft behind the stuffing boc, atop a slab of styrofoam (a la david weatherston's posting about his Installation on Hyperion).
Batteries? I agree with the suggestion that they'd be better off under the aft dinette seat. Running cable is not a huge challenge if you have a wiring fish (also useful for rigging new halyards, etc.). I have a trio of Odyssey AGMs whick tuck nicely out of the way and don't require battery boxes, but all my lights in a completely rewired boat are LED so demand is minimal, snd the fact that the one-litre Atomic 4 turns over so easily means that I don't require huge cranking power.
Cheers.

Having finally replaced it with an under-cockpit Vetus unit a la Hyperion (from a posting several years ago; can't rush these things!), my Onan waterlift muffler is available to whomever wants it -- just pay for shipping. However, if someone in, say, the Toronto region is interested, I'll be there at Thanksgiving and could deliver. Works fine; just wanted to free up space in my portside locker. An afterthought to this discussion: you might want to consider replacing your masthead sheaves if they're the originals. I got a set of custom-milled Delrin replacements from a guy near Seattle and would be happy to pass on the info. As part of the project, I drilled out the pop rivets holding my masthead fitting and drilled and tapped for 1/4-inch SS screws; it simplifies inspection and maintenance.

Hi Clare. Check out plasteakdotcom. Finally fed up with sanding, varnishing etc., I ordered rails from them last year and am delighted with the results-- as is anyone who has seen them. To facilitate shipping, I opted to have two rails on each side: two loops forward and, I think, four loops aft. I sent them a detailed set of measurements and they fit to perfection. You can opt for two base thicknesses, the larger one providing for a much more stable and less fragile installation than the originals. Cost was about $300, including shipping, and I had them within two weeks. Can send pix later this week if you like.

Suggest you try the "advice and articles" link on the westmarine.com website. You might also consider getting a copy of Sailboat Electronics Simplified by Don Casey. I found both helpful when doing a total rewire, a key element of which was replacing all incandescent bulbs and fixtures with LEDs. The only incandescent bulb I have left is the steaming light, which will be converted in the spring. You running diesel or A4? Cheers.

#24 Re: General discussion » New Owner Question » 2013-12-23 03:43:01

Any competent automobile engine shop should be able to do that to such a dinky engine. When I did a total rebuild on my 1975ish A-4 about five years ago, I began with a disassembly down to the smallest nuts and sleeves. After an Ottawa shop gad hot-tanked the major components to clean out all passages, they installed valves and gaskets, the crankshaft, pistons (new rings), all gaskets and springs, etc., having come direct to Ottawa from Moyer. I finished the rebuild at home over the winter -- a breeze with the Moyer manual. Good luck. Also went with Moyer's replacement water pump which makes impeller replacement a cinch.
