A story is this months issue comparing Spirit 28, Sabre 28, and C&C27 MkIII.    C&C27 is well spoken of - and ending line is "45 years after its introduction, I show a little favoritism toward the C&C 27."

#4 Re: General discussion » Gas Tank » 2017-05-15 12:31:04

Hi   I weighed in about a year ago - and am still pleased with my poly Moeller.   Good news about a new tank is that is saves the PITA to clean out old one.  I figured the $250 was worth saved labour and a bunch of hazmat chems.  I like that i can see the fuel level in the tank.   I suppose if there was water or crud intrusion, I could probably see that too.   The A4 has been running a lot better too.  With a new tank brings clean gas.

David

First, I huge thanks for all you have done.   There are countless times I have gone to "Black Arts" as the source of wisdom to keep the old girl maintained.

Yes, it is true the forum isn't so active.  I regularly use the Atomic 4 site, and those guys are all over it.   I guess the cries for help are louder there.

Would be nice that some tech-savy sailor inherits this.   Absent that, I like the option "keep it running but lock it up."   The information is too good for it to pass into the night.    I'm happy to defer some of the freight on op costs.

thanks again for the great service to our community.

#6 Re: General discussion » shaft seal packing material » 2016-12-21 05:49:14

Hi Mike

I redid mine a few years back.   Bought the materials as suggested by HMP in Mississaugua  -- black graphite infused fiber.   Was warned can not be used in salt water but fine for the great lakes.

See Black Arts.  Consensus is that correct size is 1/4".

See this site with excellent tutorial on replacing.

Hi

You will find a debate on the Moyer site.  Some like 15-40 Rotella.  Claims of higher oil pressure.

Original A4 manual and Don Moyer himself points to 30W.    I use the Castrol 30W and works great for me.

Hope all clears up.

#9 General discussion » Going Electric? » 2016-05-26 01:15:59

To date, seems the only viable options have been the gas or diesel.   Just like with auto industry, there is a new kid in town.   Electric.

I'm getting data from leading vendors - and definitely seems like a viable choice for those of us that use motor to get in and out of dock into the harbour.

Big variable is intended speed.  Burns through battery capacity quickly above 4.5 kts or so -- but can go hours at 3 kts.  Adding a small Honda generator provides extended cruising range.

Clear advantage is nearly no maintenance every winter spring.  Say goodby to fluids, noise and smells.    Battery TLC is main concern.

Cost no more than diesel replacement - but battery choice is wild-card.

So curious if anyone out there has taken plunge?  I'm waiting for the A4 to give its last cough - then I'm there.

Moeller makes a variety of inboard poly tanks - USCG approved etc.

I installed 2 years ago and has been welcome addition.   Price is  reasonable as well.  Has added advantage of visual sighting of fuel level since partially transparent.

[Thank you for that titbit. My old link for Moeller was defunct so I assumed they'd gone out of business (like a lot of marine firms in the last few years). We now have three options listed on the Gas Tank Warning page. - Admin]

Gerard

From what I measured today, the shaft log outer diameter is about 1.5"

Note that this is an "eyeball" estimate done without removing the stuffing box hose.

Let us know how PSS goes.    Would like to do myself one day.

Admin -- very sorry -- but I was actually trying to reach Gerard for purposes of buying his boat detailing services.

Once one of us gets the shaft log size, we will certainly post.

Sorry for issue caused

Hi Gerard

Wow, small world you will be working so close. Of course, happy for you to come aboard and measure shaft log.   I can really use some bottom work as well, and would like to discuss with you. I will try to send you a private message.

Hi Gerard

I will get out the tape the next time I'm on the boat. Should not be too many days out.    Currently on the hard as well -- but have access.

I couldnt find MMO in the greater Toronto area -- unless you consider Buffalo NY where i pick mine up.   Next time you cross border...

Agree with endorsement for Moyer Marine.   No better place for A4 advice.

#18 Re: General discussion » Replaced Windows on MKIII and Marsolved the A4 » 2015-04-22 11:46:23

Black Arts was very valuable in recent window replace.   I'm Toronto based and used Plastic World to cut new plexi.   Took a bit of fine tuning with dremel, but all fit fine.    I gave them old ones as template. Price roughly 200 so inflation has made its mark relative to prior Black Arts quote.

I have the "glue in, screw in" type.  On some other recommendations I used Dow 795 sealant.   Was easy to work with and stayed pliant for some time to fine tune.

#20 Re: General discussion » Removing fuel tank » 2015-03-27 08:18:25

In process of pulling my tank (MkIII w A4).   I find that it will come out AFTER I cut off the elbow that attaches to filler hose.   That is tomorrow's project and I plan to saw very sloooowly by hand so no sparks.   Tank is 99% empty having sucked out fuel using a spare fuel pump and outlet hose into a gas can.

New Moeller (smaller version) is ready in the wings.

Hi Brian

Welcome.

I have a dream to retire on Lake Champlain one day -- and if i do, will be looking for a C&C.    How big is the C&C fleet there?

Stay warm!

#22 Re: General discussion » Replacing Atomic 4 with Yanmar YSB8 » 2015-01-22 10:57:45

From everything i have read, this will be an expensive replacement.  Many systems including all fuel and others will have to be replaced, and decoupling and re-aligning shaft is not simple job.

Is the A4 in need of major overhaul, or are you doing for fear of the gasoline engine?

There are many discussions of this topic on the Moyer Marine forum, where there are many loyal fans of the A4.   I might also suggest you pose your question there.    You will get an outpouring of advice and opinions.

As the new year starts, I would like to put out a big thanks to David and others, for many years of keeping this site available.

I use this site as a valuable resource.   Black Arts is a gift, as well as ability to search the Forum for similar issues others have faced over the years.    Not a simple task for a non-mechanic to keep the old girl in good sailing condition, and this site has my back.

Volunteers never get enough due, so I'd like to put out a hip-hip horray to David and his association colleagues.

Hi   Time to replace tired wind instrument.   Since mast comes down each season, looking into wireless such as Garmin Gwind.

Any experiences out there w wireless?   I assume a C&C mast height doesnt put signal out of range.

This is primarily used for cruising, not racing.

#25 Re: General discussion » MKIII bulkhead rot at chainplate » 2014-09-06 04:15:05

Hi

Suspect your repair is not just limited to the bulkhead.   The deck must need some rebuild as well since that is source of water.   Besides some advice under threads "chainplates"  and "chain plate" on this site, i found the following link useful (despite name) since has photos
