Forum notes

Two things:

1. Recently I made some changes in the site links to speed access to the Forum. For some reason that _still_ doesn't make sense to me, that change caused the Forum button on some pages to return a modified, dysfunctional URL (it takes you to the Forum, but also triggers an error). I have tracked down all the places where the pattern of HTML code matches the problem pages I know about, but there may be variations I _don't_ know about. Moreover, since the problem HTML is valid, there's no way I can search for it using automated tools. And I'm not going to search the 600+ pages on this site manually.

So... If you're cruising around the site and you then get the urge to visit the Forum, please take note of where you land after clicking that page's Forum button. It should be on a list of current topics; if it's anything else (and particularly if you are told there is an error of any kind, I'd like to know.

2. Steve Reid (who alerted me to the problem above) mentioned that the numbers you have to fill in (the "Security Image" or Captcha code) is a pain because it's so hard to read accurately. I agree. However, you may have noticed at the bottom of the Forum page that we have 7500 users. About 7000 of them are phoney, set up by spammers, and every one of them will be madly generating automated messages for pharmaceutical, unclaimed bank accounts and personal enlargements if we allow people to post without the security image.

Supposedly there will be a new version of our Forum software that will allow us to have optional Captcha for registration and posting. I'd like to try Captcha for registration only and see if that works. The only other option is a wholesale migration to another type of Forum software, which I'm reluctant to commit to.

Until we get a clearer picture of the problem, though, we're stuck with the present system. Sorry.

Re: Forum notes

I'm fine with typing the security image. It's worth it, and I appreciate your work in maintaining this list. Small price to pay.

[Thank you - but I'm still thinking about migrating to open source software with a more comprehensive feature set. On the other hand I can't complain - the guys (financially desperate, every one of them) who are writing the scripts for attacking our web site probably once spent their days writing targeting codes for the USSR's nuclear arsenal - if they can screw a few dollars out of people who are credulous enough to believe they can buy 10-cent Viagra, I think their new jobs are a good bargain for their society and ours. - Admin]

"No one went broke underestimating public taste." [There you have it - the notion that "never give a sucker an even break" is not only a working hypothesis but a complete philosophical foundation that can be projected out into all human relations. It's only unfortunate that Barnum was not alive in an era like ours, where this could be patented as a "business method", such as Amazon's One-Click Ordering.]
