#1 General discussion » Window re-bed » 2013-08-27 13:31:39

I am planning to re-bed the windows on my MK V and plan to try the Sikaflex 295 method described in the Black Arts.

In reading the Sikaflex materials on line they mention placing spacers between the window and the frames to avoid squeezing too much material out. There is no mention of this in the Black Arts article.

To space or not to space, that is my question. Does anyone have any experience with this.

Also the Black Arts article mentions that the Sikaflex sets up in 10 minutes and the temporary framing may not be required? Any feedback on that?

I have just replaced the OEM spin car on my boat. It is a cast aluminum fitting that slides up and down the OEM grooves in the mast. Does anyone out there need this fitting?

Steve Reid,

How was your summer?

I have read your advice on tuning the MK V in Black Arts and have made note of your comments (as well as Len Ramsay's and Bob England's) concerning rake.

One question: Do you measure rake along the boom or along the cabin top? ie Where does your plumb bob go to?

Thanks for your help

#6 Re: General discussion » backstay adjuster » 2011-03-02 23:22:17

Hi Stephan

The MKV came two ways. My 1984 has a split backstay with dedicated attachment points on the transom (I wouldn't call them chainplates as they are simply SS ubolts) and the 1985 models have a cast aluminium fitting on the toe rails to which the split backstay is attached.

My post was not to encourage you to split the backstay, my knowledge of marine engineering is nil, only to show you how it was done on the MKV.

PS Hina who now sails in your fleet is from our club.

Thanks for your reply Brett.

I was asking because I run my 3DL on a furler and I find the leach has a curl in light airs. The sailmaker suggested alternating the direction of the furler every once in a while until the sail settles down. We are going to try that this season.

Hi Stephan

Have a look on the C&C photo album website www.cncphotoalbum.com in the Do It Yourself section. The backstay adjuster for the C&C 25 described is similar to the one on my C&C 27. I have a single fiddle block instead of one on each side and I use two wire blocks on a ring on the back stay instead of the stainless fitting shown

Hi Brent,

I was reviewing this post and noticed you were sailing a 3DL.

Do you run this on a furler and if so, have you had any issues?

I joined this site after I purchased my MKV and it has been a constant source of invaluable information. The members are knowledgeable and friendly and any questions I have had were answered promptly and effectivly. The search function is a great way to find the information you are looking for! If there had been a site like this for my previous boat, it would have saved me a lot of time and money. Keep up the great work!Rob Ladan _/)

I had a crack in the top of rudder which I opened up for resealing with expoxy. Looks like a foam core.

Looking for information on a mast crane for a MK V ie I'd like to extend the masthead to put the spin halyard ahead of the forestay and furler. Did it on my 25 and liked the results. Is this class legal?

Good morning Steve
Thanks for all of your help to date. It's a real asset to be able to talk to sailors sailing the same boat. I appreciate how you share your knowledge.
That being said, I have Another question!
Do you fly the spin off the bow? We have been experimenting with various locations (off the life lines, companionway and bow). Any preference?

#18 Re: General discussion » Mark V Tweakers » 2010-09-04 19:37:59

Thanks Steve

Do you use the swivel bases on the Spinlocks?

Interesting that you use a 3/8 spin sheet. We need to keep everything light here as the winds tend to be so light. Spin sheets are 1/4" tied to the clews (no shackles or guards).

I am thinking of installing tweakers on the spinnaker sheets for racing and would welcome advice and input from forum members.

Where are you installing them on the toe rail?

Are you bringing them back to the cockpit? To a cam cleat? Mounted where?

Any advice appreciated.

Once again great advice Steve, it worked out well for us tonight even though we were short crew (only 2 of us). Luckily the winds were very light. I love this boat!

Big race this weekend, the Giants Head Regatta in Summerland BC. A distance race on Saturday and can racing on Sunday. Can't wait to see how we go in a big fleet.

New 3DL on order as well as a Harken Furler.

While I can't afford WestJet tickets, if you are in the area you do have a place to stay and sail (as long as we can pick your brains)!

Thanks again for your ongoing advice.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for all of your help to date. The boat is coming together very nicely and results are improving.

I read your article on Tuning the Rig which was really informative for a newbie MK V sailor, thank you!

A couple of questions, if you are willing to share.

Where do you place your crew downwind in light airs. Do they fly the spinnaker and pole from the side decks. Do you steer from ahead of the primaries? I have been tending the spin sheet and guy while the crew hoists and once thye are set I hand them over and concentrate on steering.

When you are heading downwind to the mark how far out do you reach? The polars suggest 115 is the fastest in terms of VMG but deeper sure feels faster on the boat.

I have recently purchased a C&C 27 MK V Hull 520 and had a "little" reefing issue last night in 20 - 25 Knots of wind.

In trying to reef, we discovered a key item missing, the eye straps referred to in Steve Reid's post 8/30/2007 to Gary of Godspeed.

Very poor sail shape without these!

Does anyone out there have a photo of the eye strap and their rigging they can send me so I can duplicate them?

Also it seems the gate on the mast keeping the the main luff slugs is not standard or very functional.

Again does anyone out there have a photo of the gate for me?

Thanks in advance for helping out the new guy.

Hi Steve
Thaks for your reply.
My hull number is CCY27520M84K I am guessing this means hull 52?
As you guessed the intermediates make little difference as we are very close to the other MK 5's.
PHRF ratings seem to be relative to an area, we were assigned 204 which is the same as one of the 27's. The other is 203 (must have a slightly larger headsail) but close enough not to make a difference! In our first regatta (OK Charity Regatta) we managed a 4th out of 7 boats in our division!
I am goiing to enjoy this boat.
