#51 Re: General discussion » New Rope » 2012-12-16 00:55:39

Definitly use spectra for main and genny halyards. There are a couple of rope makers in Barrie that will make Spectra halyards to order.  They are allways at the boat show, and the prices are good.

#52 Re: General discussion » Dacron #1 Racing Sail » 2012-09-12 10:43:56

kevlar vs. dacron
year 1: same speed
year 2 - 5: the dacron stretches faster, the draft moves aft, and as the wind picks up the sail is slower (still fast in light air)
year 6: the kevlar falls apart, which is very slow.
Dacron will last for years and years, but is no longer fast after year 1 when the wind picks up

if you are semi-serious about racing, buy kevlar - there is not much difference in price

We fix the tack with a shakle that only comes off when we take the mast down for the winterm.
quick release? Why?

we're goint to have at least 7 C&C 27s of various types
it's going to be good racing for sure.
cone on out - you'll have fun

Hi
2 GM was an option and I have seen a MK V with a 2GM as original equipment

#57 Re: General discussion » mounting new head » 2012-06-04 09:08:33

the lagbolts holding my head down stripped out of the plywood
I cut a access hole in the front of the platform, and thrubolted the head.

#58 Re: General discussion » 1GM10 water pump access » 2012-05-16 10:16:19

that pulley has three holes in it
you can rotate the pulley until one of the holes lines up with the screw holding the plate to the water pump, and stick your screw driver through the hole

my baby-stay chain plate leaks every 4 or 5 years, and requires rebedding.  It is essential to do, or deck rock begins.

#60 Re: General discussion » Mooring cleats » 2012-05-04 11:09:20

on Distant Thunder the flat piece at the stern overhangs the hull, so it is easy to thru bolt through the glass/ply and bolt stuff on.
I'll take a picture for you, or, drop by any time. Dock C12

all the rest of us have a cleat at each corner of the stern
mounted parallel with the stern, inside the toe rail, thru bolted
I think Smoke would have room there

I think the best two 27 regattas of the year will be at RCYC and EYC
I plan to race in both

#64 Re: General discussion » Mk V Forward Bilge Drainage » 2012-04-10 10:12:52

The drainage hose  runs from somewhere under the liner under the head to the forward top edge of the bilge.  It drains all water accumulated under the liner from the head and V berth.

Early boats (1st year production???) did not have the hose.

Hi
that little hose is all the drainage there is when the boat is level, although when you heel water will find its way from under the liner in the bow to under the liner just forward of the engine.
The hose in Distant Thunder was blocked when I bought the boat - a wire coat hanger unblocked if.

#66 Re: General discussion » Oil Change » 2012-03-17 00:20:27

also, run the engine for 20 minutes to make the oil nice and warm - it will not flow at all when cold
jim

#67 Re: General discussion » Oil Change » 2012-03-15 11:00:01

Buy pump to remove the oil, available at any marine store.  They come with skinny little tubes for sucking oil.  Then suck the oil out through the tube for the dip stick.  My pump is a Pela 2000 and it works great.   Or spend a bit more and get an electric pump.

#68 Re: General discussion » Mast Tuning » 2012-03-15 10:55:54

Hi
are you racing or cruising?

cruising: make everything nice and tight, go sailing.

Racing:
start with rake: shift the gear around inside until the boat is level. loosen the back stay.  hang a wrench or somethng heavy from the halyard - with the wrench at boom hight.  Rake is the measurement from the mast to the wrench.  You want 18 to 20".  Loosen or tighten the forestay to get the desired rake.

Next tighten the side stays.  buy (or borrow) a Loos guage which measures tension.  Tighten the uppers.  You need to tighten gradually on each side.  When you are done measure from mast tip to rail on each side to ensure the mast is straight.   Measure by pullling main halyard down to the rail on each side.

Tighten mid stays next, fairly firm.  Sight up the mast track to make sure the mast stays straight and does not start to bend in an S shape.

Tighten lowers next, gradually on each side, to 25 on the Loos guage.  keep sighting up the mast to make sure it is straight all the way up.

2 weeks later check the tension again - the boat bends after time and the stays loosen up.

add sails.  go sailing
There is a tuning guide in the MKV section of the web site that is quite useful.

#69 Re: General discussion » Recomendations for Racing Sails for Mark V » 2011-12-20 08:22:34

Hi
Distant Thunder is using Quantum sails designed by Quantum Toronto.  We also have a nice #1 tape drive from the UK loft in Toronto.
We're fast

SKW is using Doyle sails designed by Ed Botterell.
SKW is fast.

We raced a MKV named Fuzzy Logic last year that had a full set of UK sails from toronto- and they were pretty fast as well.

just keep loading until you run out of room - or out of balls
jim

#71 Re: General discussion » Traveller » 2011-12-13 08:31:49

Hi
1. check the distance available at either end - on DT there is a bit more room on one side
2. cut the blue loader, or, get a short piece of track, and cut it to length.  Load using the blue plastic loader, move the car to the short piece of track, then move the car to the traveller.
It helps to block the scuppers first....just in case

#72 Re: General discussion » Mast Rake » 2011-11-24 10:27:39

Hi
rounding up in the gusts is not the same as weather helm.

- 18" rake
- in 12 knots lots of backstay
- in 14 knots all the backstay you dare
- anticipate the gusts, and ease the traveller before they hit
- pinch up a bit when the gust hits
- you willl have no weather helm and be incredibly fast

#73 Re: General discussion » Mast Rake » 2011-11-23 11:49:01

I measure a halyard hanging to the boom.
and we carry about 18" of rake

I need a new holding tank.
Has anyone replaced the tank on a MKV?
Where can I find one?

#75 Re: General discussion » Shoal vs std keel » 2011-08-26 10:57:20

not fast, due to shoal keel
also the mast is 2 feet shorter
