Hi;

I'd like to add a spinnaker crane to my MkV. Does anyone have photos or sketches that would help with this project?

Thanks,

#2 General discussion » Too Much Wind » 2017-05-26 01:16:15

Hi:
I sail in San  Diego, the wind is usually the thermal cycle, a sea breeze building as the land heats up, then fading the late afternoon. Usually, the breeze peaks at around 15 knots, sometimes closer to 20 knots.  The last two races were very windy (for San Diego)with  sustained winds over 20 knots and gusts to 27. I reefed the main, and reefed the 150% genoa, which has a foam luff.  Foam luff or not, performance of the reefed genoa is compromised. We finished way behind the rest of the fleet.
What size genoa would be correct for these conditions?

Hi Carl:
I say run, don't walk away from this one. The separation of the deck and hull at the stern is really scary. This project could be a heartbreaker; instead of sailing, you'll be spending weeks and months of your time and gobs of your cash trying to resurrect this vessel.
Check out the prices of C&C 27's currently for sale.  I'm sure you'll find one nearby, at a decent price and in way better shape!
Good Luck,

#4 Re: General discussion » Sink cabinet and engine cooling » 2016-07-13 00:37:19

Hi Roy;
Engine compartment ventilation is provided by the two cowl vents aft of your cockpit.  The inlet cowl should face forward, the exhaust aft. The exhaust should be connected to a hose which exhausts the air (and fumes) from low in the engine compartment.
Adding a panel that would isolate the sink compartment is a good idea.
There is a panel separating the engine area from the under sink compartment on my MkV.

#5 Re: General discussion » MK V mast base wiring, where does it end up ? » 2016-06-08 00:19:18

Hi Marc;
If you haven't bought the wind indicator yet, you may want to consider getting a Tacktick Model T037 wireless system. Since its wireless, no wire in the mast, no holes (and leaks?) through the cabintop, no routing the wire through the cabin, etc. You only need to supply power to the display.
The T037 sells for $687 US.  They have been purchased by Raytheon now, the Raythenon version, Model T101, sells for $1376 US. The Raytheon version has a few more bells and whistles, but the extra cost is hard for me to justify.
I have had the Tacktick version for about five yesrs and am very happy with it.

#6 Re: General discussion » Spinnaker Pole Mast Ring Height » 2016-06-05 00:59:31

Hi;
On my Mkv, the pole is 33 inches above the deck for use with a symmetrical spinnaker.  However, if I want to use it as a whisker pole, it needs to be lower. This would also be the case if you're flying an asym. The Mkv has a movable ring, so its ready for any use.
You'll have to drill holes to mount the fixed ring. Consider drilling a few more and mount a short piece of track on the front of your mast, which will allow a movable ring and more options for you.
Good Luck,

Hi;
After sailing last week, I opened up the engine access on my MkV in order to close the raw water intake.  Horrors! Inches of water in the engine compartment!  Quickly I checked the bilge.  It was full, water just up to the underside of the floorboards. I turned on the electric bilge pump while one of the crew operated the manual bilge pump. As the bilge began to drain, I began looking for the leak. I discovered two of the four clamps that seal the prop shaft packing gland hose, the hose between the hull and the shaft packing gland, had failed, corroded apart, allowing water into the boat.

Here's what they look like: https://www.dropbox.com/s/mb7m24hlekk0w7c/clamp2.jpg?dl=0

Scary ,hey? The lesson here?  Stainless steel does corrode when
left in salt water, and sometimes it takes a near miss like this one to remind us not to be complacent.

Fortunately a quick trip to the chandlery for new clamps solved the problem. The boat is fine, the skipper's relieved, though shamefaced.

Hi:

Here you go:

Model 5153

I ordered a replacement tank,for a different boat,  from Kracor some time ago.  I found they were easy to deal with.  However, I seem to recall that freight charges might be a problem. You may have to do some creative hauling to overcome that.

Good Luck,

Tony

I'm 2300 miles away from my boat right now, so I can't get at the tank.  I'm returning to San Diego next week, I'll take a look then.

#12 Re: General discussion » To pennant or not to pennant? » 2015-04-14 01:59:11

Hi Alan:

Since your Center of Effort will move up and slightly to the rear, you should experience a little more heeling moment, a greater tendency to round up in gusts, and a very slight increase in weather helm.

Inasmuch as windward ability comes mostly from the luff edge of the sail, wouldn't you be better off to keep a long luff edge to the sail, and instead of a deck sweeper, have a sail with a higher cut clew?

If, when using the "pennant sail", you elect to not use the pennant, but attach the tack directly to the deck, you won't need re-attach the pennant to the head of the sail, the halyard will do just fine.  Will you be faster with a lower jib?  I don't think so, wind is usually stronger higher up, so a higher sail should catch more wind and therefore be faster.

Good Luck,

#13 Re: General discussion » Replacing wire to rope, jib halyard on Mk I » 2015-02-18 07:26:32

Hi Brian:

When I bought my boat, it had a head foil, the jib tack was attached at the deck.  After I added roller furling, the jib tack was now attached above the furling drum.  That caused halyard wrap problems as the head of the sail was now too high. I had to have my sailmaker shorten the luff of the jibs, and I had the rigger add a halyard restrainer to the top of the mast.  (You can Google "halyard restrainer" if you're not familiar with them.)
I am happy to report that solved my halyard wrap issues, you may need to apply some similar fixes to VERMONSTAH.

Good Luck!

Hi:

I just received a 14 x 9 prop recommendation from Flex-O-Fold for my MkV.  The engine is a Yanmar 1GM10.  I'm a little nervous about the 14" diameter. Am I right to be worried?

#16 Re: General discussion » Wireless Wind Instrument » 2014-12-13 08:57:34

Hi Steve:

The cost to repair my twenty-five plus year old Signet wind instrument was $600.  For the same $600 I bought a TakTik MN30.
It was a pretty easy installation. I installed it October 2009, with no problems so far.  I am pleased with the unit.
I have not had problems with weak or lost signals.

#22 Re: General discussion » PHRF ratings MK V » 2013-03-08 02:49:04

Hi David:

I race my MkV in the Silver Gate YC Family Fleet, located in San Diego.  FLYING CIRCUS is PHRF rated at 192.  That includes +6 sec for a two blade non-folding prop and +6 seconds for roller furling.

Hope this helps.

#25 Re: General discussion »  "Original Equipment" MK III offer! » 2012-12-07 01:48:16

Hi Doog:
Can you offer 2/3?.  That depends.  First, it's the middle of winter, not peak selling season, a point in your favor.  If the  boat was only recently listed, the owner will probably be resistant to a lower offer.  On the other hand, if it's been on the market for a while, there is  more likely to be some willingness to negotiate.  If you have the boat surveyed, and you should, you can use the issues uncovered by the survey as reasons for your reduced offer.
So go ahead, make the lower offer and let us know how it works out!
Good Luck,
