Hey Dave,
I have a fairly good #3 and just tossed an old jib which I had been using for single handing and replaced it a few weeks ago,with new 105 % Genoa which we used yesterday in 18-25 knots  with a single or double reef upwind and a full main downwind. Here we are racing under SLVYRA ( Montreal) -- not a lot different than PHRF-LO . It would almost seem though , that handicap systems should have different ratings for different winds --but then again, we love it when it drops to 4-10 knots and we can take advantage of our light air pointing/speed.

Although Aragorn, my Mk lll , seems to excel in 10 knots of wind or less during our club races, she ( and me) have trouble sailing her to her rating when the breeze pipes up into the 20's.
It's not like we are are new couple-- she and I have been together forever 30 years now.
Has she been hiding from me, some dark quirk, some aversion to higher winds, all these years?
  Got any tips for us to help heal this rift in our relationship??

Hi Jean,
This could be caused by a few things ( a bent rudder for example) but the first ( and the simplest ) thing to check is the vertical-ness of your mast.

Shorten your main halyard till the fitting just reaches the toerail on the port side of the boat, at a point at 90 degrees to the mast. Now take the halyard to the stb. side and measure there. If these are not equal, your mast is leaning.. Adjust the turnbuckles till the tip of the mast is directly over the centreline of the boat.
   Hoisting a measuring tape to the masthead would give you an even more accurate result but using the halyard will give you a quick idea.

Last year I replaced my Mainsail cover as part of the rejuvenation of Aragorn's decks.
The old cover, although faded from its original bright red , is still serviceable as a sail protector.
  If someone needs a cover for a Mk III mainsail , who doesn't mind the colour red and who is willing to pay the postage to his place, it is yours .
First come , first served .

   There are a number of small manufacturers of rope . For example, one called "Cylex" is located in Deseronto Ont. less than 80 miles from my home. Another one is located near Hawkesberry Que. , a similar distance from me. Once these people have filled a 5,000 ' reel., they often have "ends" left ( not enough for another full reel). These 'ends' find their way to the market, either out the back door of the plant in short lengths to local customers or to individuals who buy them cheaply and resell them ( Flea Markets are often outlets).
  Some of these "ends" may may be sub-standard cosmetically or perhaps even structurally so if you find one of these sources , it pays to examine the rope carefully.

I have had what I considered very reasonable expenses by shipping sails via bus lines -- faster than Canada Post and much , much cheaper that UPS.

Hi Chris,
   I am away from home, where my manual is, however, from experience with my Mk III I can suggest that if you look inside your boat and located the two major bulkheads , those are  the points where the hull is best supported from inside. These are at the bridgedeck and forward end of salon.

   The numbers chiselled ( or routered ) into the bulkhead tell me that your boat is very likely registered, ( rather than licenced ). She would have been registered under a " copyrighted " name with her original point of registration recorded along with her name.
Some digging on your part will reveal the mystery to you.

     Some learn from their mistakes ( or the mistakes that others on the forum have made ) but Moyer's manual is certainly to be recommended. Going down the wrong road starting out from making a bad diagnosis of a problem can be time consuming, frustrating and expensive.

Hey again Mike,
   The oil you see in the transmission is engine oil --- the engine base and the transmission are connected and the same oil lubricates both. Note: when you change your engine oil, you will only be  able to suck out about 3 1/2 litres so in reality, you cannot do a "complete" oil change as some old oil always stays in the transmission.

    It has been about 12 years since I adjusted my transmission clutch but as I remember it, the adjustment nut is locked in place with a 'bendable' sort of "keyway" which must be released in order to move the adjustment. If the adjustment is set too 'high' you'll have difficulty forcing the gears into either fwd. or reverse. If set too 'low', slippage will occur. You should be able to find a happy medium.

Hi Mike,

The adjustment that you mention, is provided  to take up for wear in the clutch plate over time. As happened to you, a worn clutch plate will eventually lead to slippage.
The mechanic who did your adjustment may have set up the clutch two " notches" when one " notch" may have been enough. If you leave it "as is ",  over time, shifting will become easier as the clutch plate slowly wears again but if it is now just too stiff to shift easily,  back off one "notch" on the adjustment inside the transmission.

Hi Jeff,
I have a Mk III rather than a Mk V, and I installed an opening port some years ago.The installation should be similar. I found a port with the same height as the opening but it was  just slightly longer than the opening  (which had oval shaped ends)- so a bit of cutting was needed thru the deck and the liner. I remember making some "filler" pieces out of marine plywood to fill in the space between deck and liner, putting them around the perimeter of the opening  so that the inner and outer flanges of the new port had something solid to butt against. Use a good sealant and " Bob's your Uncle" .

Hi Allen,
  My guess is that the cable is arranged that way so that intuitively you push the shift lever in a forward direction to make the boat go forward and to make that happen, the far end of the cable has to approach the transmission from the front -- hence the "loop" around the engine. As to the long length; when a loop is required, it must be a gradual bend or the cable would bind in the sheath. Both ideas are just guesses but seem to make sense.

Suitable for 27' to 35' boat.   Heavy wall 2 inch diameter aluminum Reaching Strut  pole.
  6 foot length ---  ( from jaw to end pulley). Outboard end has a pulley to accept the spinnaker guy and fittings for up-haul and down-haul lines.  Jaw on inboard end attaches to two heavy rings  (included) which bolt to each side of the mast .
  A great aid to obtaining leverage to adjust the guy on longer spinnaker reaches but hardly justified on the short ( River)  legs I am currently sailing.     $ 90.00.(was $200)

  I have had no experience removing the mast step, but I have experienced a ' drip' in this area . It turned out to be leakage , not through the mast step, but rather, water was passing through the aperture just a few inches aft of the mast step where the wiring for the mast systems passes though the deck. In my case , the water followed the wiring down and forward a few inches and dripped out of the cover plate which covers the aft rear of the mast inside the cabin.
Could this be your source too ?

Although it pains me to see the prices of our 'babies' drop so much lately, I guess we have to face reality --It is the old law of supply and demand at work.
   A couple of years ago, a fellow 27 owner was lamenting to me about not being able to get his asking price. I said , " B....., if I wanted to sell Aragorn , and I counted all the day-sails, weekends, weeks of holidays and countless races I have had with her over the years, and if i just charged myself $5.00 per hour, I could probably almost  give her away and consider myself to be breaking even."

I wonder if you should fill the tank with water before sawing?

I second Steve's thoughts. If your A-4 has lasted this long, it proves these beasts are strong, reliable engines. You can basically reset the odometer/hour meter back to zero by getting a rebuilt A-4 from Moyer for under $5,000. The installation will be a " drop-in" with no extras to buy or worry about. Unless you are very young, the rebuilt will outlast you ( and your boat ).

  It has been thrilling to watch the Volvo Ocean racing unfolding day by day --- (Download the Volvo Ocean Race App. if you'd like to stay updated with positions, neat videos etc. etc.).   

One thing I have observed is that these boats all seem to carry the deepest part of their sails' drafts ( both main and genoas ) WELL  forward of the 50% of chord length point --Much further forward than is my practice. Is it their sails' construction/material --Their speed--or some other factor that causes them to do this -- apparently to advantage ??

Any ideas/comments?

Hi Alan,
   I second Dave's advice. Dacron for sure--- for durability and economy. You don't need a " deck-sweeper" so avoid hassles between the clew and the lifelines by keeping the clew well above the lifelines. These boats move on the power of their headsails so despite your greater expected wind speeds, the larger option might be best for you when you consider how easy it is to slip a reef ( or two ) into the mainsail when the wind pipes up a bit.

Hi Mike, sounds like you are depending only on the instructions provided with the kit. If you google "blue sea", as I did, you'll find a wealth  of diagrams, diagnostics, installation tips  etc. for each of their systems as well as FAQ's
