#51 Re: General discussion » I need info to get my PHRF rating. Can you help me? » 2011-04-07 06:29:34

Hi Joe:
Your original post asked was the deck cored. Yes it is.  Says so in the owners manual.
Your later post asked about the HULL being cored.   No it's not.
You'll have to measure your mainsail to get your girth dimensions. Not hard at all.  My request for rating didn't ask for mainsail girth dims., only spinnaker.
Good Luck,
Tony

#52 Re: General discussion » I need info to get my PHRF rating. Can you help me? » 2011-04-07 00:53:01

Hi Joe:
If you go to the "Sea Change" section of this website, you'll find  LWl, ballast weight and sail area.
The deck is cored.
It should not be difficult to get a PHRF rating.  While the Lake Michigan PHRF may not have a record of your boat, the surely must have other MkV's in their list.
Good Luck,

#53 Re: General discussion » Looking to buy West Coast Mark V » 2011-03-30 00:49:48

Hi:
As you probably know by now, there aren't many C&C 27's on the west coast.  Are you firmly committed to an outboard version?  Wouldn't an inboard diesel enhance sailing qualities much better than an outboard hanging off one side of the transom?
Yachtworld has a nice looking inboard MkV listed in Portland, OR. check it out!

Tony

Hi Will:
Besides all the great suggestions about buying a C&C 27 that you found on this website, you should give this one a look:

http://www.capedory.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=24835&highlight=moisture+meter+metre

IF the deck isn't rotten, and IF you're handy, and IF you've got the time, this could be a real steal.  Otherwise, no.

Hi:
My Mk V has a black plastic extrusion fitted inside a slot on the mast.  The bolt rope on the main sail slides along this extrusion.
I'd like to get about a foot or so of this stuff.  Does anyone know of a source?
Hopefully,

Hi Steve:
I guess I wasn't clear on my electrolysis comment.   That was due to the Previous Owner, PO in my earlier post.  Currently, (no pun) neither my marina nor the boat have stray current problems, fortunately.

Tony

Hi:
Have you upgraded your prop to one of those nifty Flex-O-Folds and still have your old prop sitting forlornly on a shelf?
If you have one you'd like to get rid of, I'd be happy to take it off your hands.
Sadly, my current prop has some electrolysis issues,(PO)and looks pretty ugly.

#59 Re: General discussion » Ventilation issues on MKV » 2010-11-04 00:54:26

Hi Brian:
I have a 4" Nicro solar powered vent mounted in the head area on FLYING CIRCUS. The low profile exterior dome does not interfere with sheets, etc. I'm happy with it.
My forward hatch can be cracked open about a quarter inch but still be locked.  I usually leave the hatch opened like this.  You may try that if you have the same style hatch.
I strongly suggest you get 4" vents, not 3".  They'll move nearly twice as much air. I second your idea of adding a vent to the companionway board.
Good Luck!

How to tie a buntline hitch:

Note it's a clove hitch tied around the standing part.  Cool!

I too, have been looking for a better way to store these lines, both when underway and in the slip.   I'd really like to see some photos, if that's possible.

#63 Re: General discussion » Cockpit Locker Drain » 2010-06-30 00:37:26

Hi Jacksonh:
I still haven't done anything on my boat to find and seal up the leak.  It doesn't rain a lot here in sunny San Diego. I think Jean's suggestion of climbing into the locker and looking for gaps in the lid is a good one.  If you do try that, let us know how it worked out.

#64 Re: General discussion »  27 MK II Keel » 2010-05-22 00:57:18

Hi:
During the prepurchase survey, the surveyor noticed loosness in the keel of my boat. The bolts were tightened without incident.  Keelbolt torque specs can be found in the "Black Arts" section of this website.  You'll want to torque yours without delay.
The "C&C smile", a separation line between the keel and hull, is a common occuence on these boats, and probably accounts for the "normal" comment.
Good Luck,

Hi:
While rummaging through the miscellaneous items left aboard by the previous owner, I came across four Barient disassembly tools. These are for winches with an allen head capscrew inside the socket.  On this boat, a Barient 10 winch.
So, I have three unneeded Barient tools, which I'd be happy to mail to anyone needing one.  Just send your mailing address to apjeskeatattdotnet and I'll mail it off to you.

Hi:
If I am flying my 150% genoa, I use the track on the coaming, with the car pretty much all the way forward. This is fime if we're close hauled.  However, when bearing off onto a reach, we now should be using the more forward car on the "regular" track alongside the deckhouse, but I don't know an easy way to transfer the sheet between cars.
If you've experienced this problem, do you have a fix?

#67 Re: General discussion » GPS glassed into bulkhead » 2010-04-16 01:43:11

Hi Bill:
Well, we know of chartplotters mounted on binnacles, so it certainly should be possible to mount one on a cabin bulkhead.  One would need to very sure the unit is readable in direct sunlight however.  I would think you'd need quite a large display screen as you may be several feet away. Think unit on starboard bulkhead and vessel on port tack with skipper up on the rail!
If I were doing this, I'd mount the unit on a swing arm so it could be positioned in the companionway and read from the cockpit, or swung into the cabin for weather protection, secure storage and inside use.
I used to work for a marine firm that installed lots of electronics, we recommended Raytheon to our customers.
Good Luck,

#68 Re: General discussion » Spreaders Mk V » 2010-03-05 01:08:35

Hi Steve:
Thanks for the input on the baby stay.  Inasmuch as jibing the spinnaker pole around the baby stay is a hassle, I'm glad to find out that it doesn't need to be constantly connected.  How do you stow the disconnected baby stay?

Tony Jeske

#69 Re: General discussion » Spreaders Mk V » 2010-03-04 03:16:08

Hi Alan:
My 1985 MkV #581, has the same slot and slug arrangement as SMOKE.  I don't think moving the shroud 1/4" forward is going to help mast bend very much.  I'm mentally imagining the force vectors involved.  Since the shrouds still join the chainplate in line on the deck, the slight forward force generated by moving the shroud ahead at the spreader  is brought back to where it was back at the deck, isn't it?  All I can envision happening is a slight rearward force on the tip of the spreader.
I would think tension on the baby stay would do more to promote mast bend.  I'd vote for leaving it as is.
Happy Tuning,
Tony Jeske

#71 Re: General discussion » Batteries » 2010-01-25 00:47:13

Hi Alan:
My 1985 has one battery located between the fuel tank and the transmission and the second forward in the cockpit locker.
Given the need for these boats to reduce weight in the cockpit, I'd like to believe the factory didn't install that battery behind your fuel tank! After you've gone through the agony of removing it, I suggest you do yourself a big favor and don't re-install it back there.

Hi:
Can I tie a bos'n chair to a halyard and go up the mast?  I'm concerned about the turning blocks at the base of the mast.  Do I need to recruit a youngster for this project?  How wobbly is the boat when someone's up there? Any hints would be appreciated.  I only need to go up to the steaming light.

#73 Re: General discussion » tacktick windspeed » 2009-12-30 01:38:12

Hi:
I just installed one on my MkV a few months ago.  The instructions were adequate, installation was easy.  The unit works fine.  There does seem to be some concern about problems occuring after a few years of use and problems with customer service.  The entire unit was only $25 (US) more than a replacement masthead sender for the Signet 1500 on the vessel, so it was a no brainer for me.
Good Luck,

#74 Re: General discussion » new headsail » 2009-12-29 00:25:39

Hi:
Well, that depends on where you plan to sail.  When my boat was sailed in San Francisco Bay, VERY windy, the previous owners usually sailed with a 90% jib.  Now the boat is in San Diego, where there's a lot of light air, so I fly a 150%. Talk to sailors in your area with boats around our length, see what they suggest for your wind conditions.
Good Luck,
Tony Jeske

Hi:

I opened the cockpit locker on my Mk V the other day and noticed a puddle of rain water under the battery tray.  I was surprised to find it hadn't drained into the bilge.  Is there a plugged weep hole I missed?  Do I need to add one?
Yes, I know, why don't I just find the leak and solve the problem once and for all?
